I had my surgery on April 29th. I had an emergency c-section about 16 months ago, and I think I'd go through 15 more of those rather than EVER have throat surgery again.

This has been the most painful thing. The first day was alright - I was really scared of anestetia so I cried a bit before they put me out, but surgery was fast and I woke up in recovery. I wasn't in a ton of pain and I kinda slept on and off for about 5 hours until they sent me home. Mine was laser so I was able to have outpatient.

The second day wasn't so bad either. I slept a lot due to the demerol I was on. My throat hurt but I drank a ton.

Third day was HELL. It was my birthday, actually. I woke up puking my brains out. It hurts SO bad to throw up when you have just had a tonsillectomy - oh my god I cannot even describe it. I was having hot and cold flashes and I got sweaty and shaky and finally after spinking about a 102 temp I went to the ER. They seriously thought I was doing speed because of the way I was acting and my heartrate was insane. Luckily my doctor was on call so he came to see me and switched my meds - he seems to think the demerol on an empty stomach was making me throw up and tweak out. That was yesterday.

Today majorly sucked. I can't stomach or swallow anything, my throat is so sore. I have no voice. It KILLS when I yawn and now my ears are killing me. I seriously spent most of the day crying because I just did not know what to do with myself. I have some Compazine for nausea so that helps, but I cannot believe what post-op has been like! I'll take that emergency c-section ANY day!!!

I got my tonsils and adnoids cut out today at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, MD

I'm 31 years old and not only experienced strep throat, tonsillitis, etc. - I also had lots of those nasty tonsil stones that smelled like doo doo.

So it's been about 6 hours and I feel pretty good! My uvula is swollen as can be, it hurts to swallow and I have a slight headache, but I haven't needed to lie down and rest yet.

I'm guessing this is all the calm before the storm (??)

They prescribed me, what seems like, a gallon of hydrocodone/lortab for pain relief, so they obviously know more than I do!

What was strange for me, is when I had my tonsils out on May 1 the first day wasn't so bad for me. It was only moderately painful to swallow, and i even had a few bites from a piece of bread. It wasn't until later that I guessed that on this first day I was still full of whatever painkiller they gave me during surgery. When that wore off and I relied on the Vicodin, life got worse. Speaking stopped and swallowing anything was like swallowing a knife. It got demoralizing after a while, especially when any food commercial on the TV nearly moved me to tears in desperate longing. Now that it's May 5 I'm doing better. The pain is lessening and I'm focusing on eating pasta, jello, ice cream, iced tea, and Ensure. Gotta recommend that Ensure -- it's for sick or old people and it tastes like a flat milkshake. My favorite is strawberry and it should have a gold star on it that says "try this if you had your tonsils out a few days ago."

I had my tonsils removed on the afternoon of 5/07/08.

Its been a full 48 hours and i've had a very pleasant experience.

Im a 26 y/o female and while i might still have youth on my side i do believe the key to feeling good after a tonsillectomy is fluids.

I came home and slurrped down a few spoons of jello. I started drinking my fluids, slowly, and have maintained an even flow. I thought for sure that I would be up to the bathroom a hundred times but my body is absorbing the liquids faster than i can get them in!

so far the pain hasnt been very bad at all. Again, drinking fluids keeps my throat from swelling up. I notice when i havent been drinking enough it becomes harder to swallow.

I've been only taking the liquid lortab at night. 2 tsp every 4 hours to help me get a good nights rest.

I have eaten, soup, ramen noodles, jello, yogurt, pudding and mac'n'cheese without any problems.

My only complaints so far are how disgusting my tongue and throat feel.
I cant speak very well at all yet and i get very light headed/nauseous if i am on my feet for more than a minute or so.

many people say that the pain gets worse after the 3-5 day mark when the scabbing happens so we'll see how that goes.

I'll try to remember to come back and up date.

I had my T&A on the 7th too, and it hasn't been horrible. But last night was harder than the night before. My ears have begun to hurt and it seems like my throat is tightening. I imagine this means that the scabs are beginning to form.

Campuer, how's your recovery going? Today my neck is pretty tight and my ears are hurting.

I ate about 6 spiral noodles with cheese, and although it didn't hurt going down last night, i felt like i was clogging my airway. I don't think I'll do that again.

Anything of substance that hasn't hurt for you that I could try?

Today is the 1 week anniversary of my T&A removal surgery and for those in the early stages (Days 1-5) who think you have it easy - don't get your hopes up. Once the scabs begin to form over your "tonsil holes", ooh boy. Not fun at all. I've been trying to lay off the liquid pain stuff that I was prescribed but it's tough. Constant pain from the ears all the way down to the neck. It just plain hurts. I still can't talk, mainly because my uvula is halfway down my throat. I really can't wait until this is healed up.

With that said though, I feel much better overall. I'm not as tired as I used to be when I had my tonsils in. That's a huge plus. At 31 years old, I feel like I have a new lease on life... even while still in pain!!

Hi Klip,

I'm at day 5... and it feels like things are getting a little tighter. Is this the first sign that it's about to get worse? I have discomfort but its quite bearable right now, to the point where I can still do my work. I shouldnt expect this going into the next couple of days?

That's about when I felt things begin to go south.

And just to make it clear - the pain is bearable. It's not like some of the stories I've read ("OMG worse than child birth!"), but if you're not taking any sort of pain reliever - it can hurt. Another thing you must keep in mind - your body is running a fever. My ENT told me to expect 100+ degree body temperature for two weeks. So it's VERY important you take whatever was prescribed to you for pain relief (since it likely has the active ingredient found in Tylenol) as well as your antibiotic to keep away infection. Missing these 2 doses can cause serious pain AND problems!

I'm back at work today (I work from home) and even after a dose of Hydrocodone+Tylenol, I'm clear headed and mostly pain free.

Thank you for your insights, Klip.

I'm taking Tylenol with codeine, every 4 hours. And it only tends to put to sleep when I'm kind of sitting around. Now for example, I'm really alert.

One thing I've noticed is that I'm waking up less and less in the middle of the night. So for the past couple of days I've been missing a middle of the night dose. When I realize it, I take half a dose. It seems to work fine that way.

I have been trying to stay hydrated too. I have about 3 large icecubes and about 12 ounces or so of water every 1-2 hours.

One unusual thing is that my cycle started. I thought my body is under a large amount of stress since I'm only eating about 1 pudding cup , 1-2 flavor ices, and 1 slimfast per day. But apparently that's enough. Is that a pretty good diet in your opinion? I've heard that some people can't get hardly anything down, so I'd like to gauge how I'm doing on that front.

I'm also really used to eating oatmeal for breakfast, so I'm tempted to try it. Anyone had any success with it?

My diet has been applesauce, water and tea. That's it, for the last 7 days.

I see you're doing pudding and Slimfast. Dairy is a definite no-no after a tonsillectomy. It creates a back up of bacteria in the back of your throat as well as lots of thick mucus. I learned the hard way and would much rather stick with non-dairy... as much as I loved eating Ben & Jerry's ice cream, yogurt and pudding. It just wasn't worth it.

Even the applesauce still burns my throat. I have to water it down a bit. But it's been doing the trick so far. But I would strongly recommend kicking the dairy.

I have noticed that mucus too, and it's rather uncomfortable.

Luckily I picked up some applesauce yesterday, I'll start that this afternoon.

Do you think that I'm in a lot of trouble since I've been having pudding? Am I less likely to have been healing over the past few days?

I noticed this issue right after eating icecream so i immediately stopped eating it, but I didn't know that pudding and slimfast have been contributing to it too.

so no oatmeal either?

I don't think it will slow down your healing process. It just makes it uncomfortable.

I'm pretty sure Slimfast has milk in it, you may want to check though.

Oatmeal should be ok, as long as it's soft and watered down. Though once the scabs start to form, you'll want to stay away from hot foods/liquids.

What you we be eating when the scabs start to form/fall off?

At this point, mine are still white and appear wet.

I'm sticking to what's been working - applesauce, lots of water, chicken broth... and um, that's about it!
