Hello everyone.

Today I went to see my friend who is recovering from stent surgery. We talked for hours about her condition and she told me that one doctor recommended her to do homocysteine levels test. I don’t know a lot about it, but her story that everyone with heart issues should do this test really interested me.

So, I believe that you do have more experience than I do so I was hoping that you can tell me who should be tested to Homocysteine levels? Everyone with heart issues or some specific patients?

Tell me what you know.

Thank you.

Hello Eric,

Let's start with homocysteine. Homocysteine is an amino acid. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. When proteins break down, elevated levels of amino acids like homocysteine may be found in the bloodstream.

There is actually no specific recommendation for anyone to do a homocysteine level test, the test is also relatively expensive, it isn't widely available, and it is rarely covered by insurance.

When it comes to the test itself, the higher the level of homocysteine, the bigger are the chances of the person getting some sort of a heart disease.

But as I said, there are some other tests which your friend could do and which are better and cheaper.

Hi everyone,

It is true that this test isn't used a lot and you can't really do it anywhere, but when it comes to its price, it's between 100 and 200 dollars. It might be a lot for someone, but for this kind of test, I think it's okay.

There is no specific type of people who should be tested using this test, Eric. If you fear that you might develop some sort of a heart disease, then you can go ahead and do this test. Otherwise, you got no big use of it.

Regarding what you wrote, I doubt that your friend is in need of this test.

Hey everybody,

I believe that it is a quite good test actually, if you already think that you might be prone to having some type of a heart disease. And it is definitely not expensive if you consider how important it can be.

If you find out that you are actually prone to having a heart disease, you can change your lifestyle, take some special medications, go on a special diet and you will probably prevent that heart disease from occurring. I believe that this makes it a pretty good test, and 100 dollars are definitely worth it, it's just my opinion but I believe that you guys will agree.

Hello guys,

Well now that you said it like that, Jonathan, I think I'll agree with you. But the fact still stands that this test isn't available everywhere so you will probably have to travel somewhere in order to do it which will cost you a bit more than just the test itself.

I'll answer your question as well, Eric, even though the people above me already answered it pretty good. There is no special type of people who should be tested to homocysteine level. Only people who doubt that they might have any problems with their hearts or they maybe have some medical history already.

Hello. First, you need to know what is homocysteine because in your post I can’t figure out do you know it. I think that you don’t know, according to your post. Homocysteine is naturally occurring amino acid produced as part of the body’s methylation process. The level of homocysteine in the plasma is increasingly being recognized as a risk cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer’s. So I guess that people who have predispositions to have this disease should be tested. Maybe there no are specific type of person who should be tested and maybe everyone can be tested but still – I think that your doctor knows the best.

Hi there guys.

I think that there no are rules who should be tested to homocysteine levels. I know that homocysteine test measures the amount of the amino acid homocysteine in your blood and this test is done to: identify vitamin B12 deficiency or folic acid deficiency. Also, it is used to help identify a rare inherited disease that causes a deficiency of one of several enzymes that are needed to convert food to the energy. It is used to determine a cause for otherwise unexplained blood clots as well.

I think that everyone can get tested on it.

Hello everyone. Yes, I believe as well that everyone can be tested to homocysteine levels but I believe that people or patients with heart issues are the priority when it comes to this test. It is an amazing thing, I remember when my dad did it he told me that he is sorry because he was waiting a couple of months to do this test. He found out that he has some heart issues thanks to this test. I don’t know what could happen because he was waiting for too long to do this test, but when he did it he was satisfied. It is not a big deal and everyone can do it.

Good day everyone.

My doctor tested my sister’s child to homocysteine levels. They told her that a health practitioner should ordered a homocysteine test before to determine does her child has a vitamin B12 or folate efficiency. This also may be elevated before B12 and folate tests are abnormal. I know that some doctors recommend this test in malnourished individuals, who often absorb less vitamin B 12 from their diet program and to individuals with poor nutrition, such as drug or alcohol addicts.

I remember these facts perfectly because my friend explained this to me very detailed and I'm grateful to him for that.
