I also wondered how many people would have a hemorrhoidectomy again and am glad to see most people agree they would probably go through it a second time (but let's hope we don't have to!). I'm now five days post surgery having two internal and two external removed using the traditional scalpel method and my experience has been a mix of not so bad and not so great so at this point I would probably do it again as long as things continue as they have been. I'm very grateful I've not had the extreme pain some people report as that was my biggest fear going in. My surgeon did give me Oxycontin and Percocet which I've been taking religiously and the pain only got ahead of me once. I honestly don't know how folks have done it with just Tylenol or smaller narcotics - but I'm also a 31 year old baby! In short, I lived 10 years with them getting worse and never really knowing it so after this last summer and the constant pain I was in I'll gladly pay these next few weeks as the price for relief.

If you go through with it I wish you the best of luck and a speedy recovery!

I would never ever have this surgery again. I wish I never went through it. I am on my 3rd week of healing and just found a new batch of rhoids. I never imagine pain like this ever! I wound up in the ER 2 times not to mention it messed up my urination also. I still have problems with that. My doctor was horrible. I told him I cannot take percocet or darvocet I throw it up so he gives me oxycodone and that makes me not be able to breath. I had mentioned to him since the surgery I have had problems breathing. I now have strings still hanging because I refuse to go back to him. He never returned calls when I was in dire need of knowing what to do. The only thing that helped me get through it was the bath tub, ice, and prayers to God that I make it through. It has made my chronic diarrhea worse. I am scared to leave the house. Number 2 isn't so bad as it was but I always feel I have to rinse with water because all of the open sores. I still don't know how many he removed. I know I had internal and external. I took a pic of the before and tonight I looked in there and it looks like I didn't even have surgery. I have cried for the past three weeks. I am so emotional from this whole thing. I would never ever recommend this surgery to anyone unless its life or death situation.

I would go back to the other rhoids in a heart beat. I have had two diagnostic laps, gall bladder surgery, breast reduction, and a larynx surgery. I also gave birth to a 10lb 14oz boy. I would do all those things again 10 times each before I would ever have a hemorrhoidectomy.

There really is no need to go through those painful hemorrhoid surgeries anymore. Most of them require down time, are expensive and include a risk of infection. There are many alternative methods that are done in office, non surgical, painless and affordable! There is one that I know of called the Ultroid procedure. If you are considering having surgery......please check your other options first!!!!

I will try not to as it's quite a financial strain and also a painful route. If it recurs, I'll try to trest it at the early stages before it gets severe, unless I really can't cure it.

Thank you for what sounds like a realistic, but manageable description. I also, have been considering backing out. I keep thinking "c'mon, I had six unmedicated births!! I can do this!" but then I read these horrific accounts and I am paralyzed with fear. I have never had ANY surgery, any stitches, any broken bones, any extensive dental work...the anesthetic is so scary to me as well! At 55, I have been so fortunate, but this condition is really starting to get in the way of exercise, sex, enjoying the outdoors...enough!

Thanks for this factual and positive post showing that there is light at the end of the tunnel. I have just had the op 3 days ago and passing a stool is very painful even though I am drinking lots, taking fiber, stool softener and pain killers. There is also a reasonable amount of blood, however the pain is nothing like the pain I was in before the op, and as one person mentions the constant worry of a flare up. I decided to have the surgery to get my life back!! I know it will take a couple of weeks to get back to normal, but at least then I won't have to live in fear. My dad had this surgery when he was the age I am now, 36, and although some piles came back they were more manageable than before and he never regretted surgery. You just can't live in that pain, its draining and makes life miserable.

I had the surgery yesterday. Of course it is very uncomfortable, but it is not worse than the pain I would have with flare ups. I would get them like once a year since I was 15 yrs. old. I am 38 now, and had no idea since last year that surgery was even an option. I was at a regularly scheduled Pap smear when my PCM asked me would I like a referral. It wasn't even a second thought. I just had to find the right time to do it because I am a very busy woman. I am in a little pain on the second day, but nothing that can't be fixed with a sitz bath, lanacane, noesporin, and a little spray of dermoplast every now and then. I also have been using baby wipes after using the bathroom instead of TP. It was also a cosmetic decision for me. I am very sexual and felt self conscious because in the right position, I'm sure they were visible. I made the right decision, I'm sure  of it.

I absolutely would not recommend trying to have a bowel movement without sitting in water.

Google foods that contain fiber and buy all of them! It so helps! I also bought fiber capsules that contain psyllium. It has made this experience so much easier.

I'm the type of person that doesn't like to sit my a$$ down. I felt 80 percent better today so I decided to wash clothes which requires me to walk up and down 2 flights of about 13 steps each. These are all lessons learned for me. I will take it easy from now on. I feel a pressure down there that I can tell that comes from doing too much.  I have still been doing my sitz baths. But I hadn't taken percossets  in 2 days, and after all that movement today, I needed to pop one. So my advice if you have this surgery is that even if you start feeling better soon like I did, give your body the time it needs to rest.

After less than a week after my surgery, I am feeling fandamntastic! I am able to have a bowel movement normally which was my biggest problem. I feel great and would absolutely do it again if I had to do it over. I thought I would be down for at least 2 weeks after reading some of the posts. I guess it just depends on the person. During this time, I took 3 to 4 sitz baths a day with Epsom salt.  The first few days I was using neosporin and lanacane.  On the second day I incorporated dermoplast, which my doctor recommended, and I only used it that day and the day after because it kind of burned and I didn't like it. Oh and tucks pads and baby wipes are very important during this process. I only took my pain pills for the first day faithfully, on the second day I took them once and then skipped a day and needed one that day. They were just too strong for me and I knew they caused the stool to harden so that turned me off towards them. I engaged in a very fiber rich diet and drank plenty of water, took my fiber pills and stool softeners. Now. On the fifth day, and I'm not sure if I should be recommending this, I start inserting the hemorrhoid suppositories my doctor prescribed to me per surgery and using my preparation h cream and I swear, it seemed to work wonders. All I'm saying is I feel great now and my anus looks  Fantastic. I think it is just one of these things, that when you go through it, you will become very creative to speed through the pain. God bless you all, unless I backslide, I should not be back on here.

Hi All, Ive suffered from prolapsed hemorroids for 20 years (40 years old now) and they never bled or caused me any pain, but they were very very uncomfortable after a BM.  Sometimes uncomfortable for hrs.  I had the surgery done on early October 2012 and can say that i feel normal once again.......No lumps or bumps.........  It was painfull for a few days especially post surgery, but this should be expected.  They prescribe pain killers for a reason and i reccomend that you take them.  I was on softeners (twice daily) for 3-4 days and then cut back to once daily for a 3-4 days.  I loaded up on bags of salt and had about 3-5 salt baths a day.  I ware a pad for about 5 days due to spotting.......... I had a week off work and resumed my regular running/jogging after 3 weeks.  I am now back running bout 30km a week and back in the gym lifting weights.  I've increased my daily water intake and eat more fruit.  I highly recommend the surgery and ask your surgeon lots of questions if your unsure....My bit of advice is to take a couple of weeks off work and rest..................Was it painful post surgery????.....YES................Do i feel better now????.......I SURE DO.......
