I just had my hemorrhoidectomy Fri., 12/27.  I have been dealing with this problem for 20yrs. & was becoming borderline anemic.  In quite a bit of pain right now but Dr. said to give it 4 wks, and I'll feel like a whole new person.  I hope he's right. I haven't had a bowel movement yet, and have been eating minimally high-fiber foods. Not sure if I would go through this again, as it's only been a couple of days.  Dr said recovery was the hardest part. Warm baths help immensly.  I had to do this because of my anemia. I would suggest finding the right Dr. He has been a great help and didn't sugarcoat anything.

Does anyone know the normal time to poop after this surgery?  I don't want to wait 2weeks and be in agony

I hope you are feeling much better by now. I had my surgery on 12/20. I have been dealing with hemorrhoids for the last 20yrs and became borderline anemic as well. My hemorrhoids protruded, bled, and were very painful for hours after a BM because of the protrusion. The first 7 days after the surgery were horrific. Everyday after is slowly but surely better. I am 14 days post op and feel good. I had my first BM on day 3. I take Miralax every day after my first meal, and have been having soft, regular stools. I drink tons of water and ate a bland, normal fiber diet for the first 10 days then started introducing other foods and more fiber. Giving the wound time to air out is extremely helpful a well. Exercise as much as you can tolerate because that helps to produce BM's. Hang in there, it will get better.

Thanks JesSki. Hope you're feeling better as well. I finally did my biz on the 5th day after the surgery. Wow! That wasn't fun. I've been taking stool softeners & benefiber everyday and am actually off of the Percocet and back to ibuprofen. I have to say that while this surgery is painful and extremely unpleasant, I haven't had the pain that others on the web have mentioned. I almost didn't go through with it because of what I read. Knock on wood, maybe I got lucky. I would tell anyone who's close to being anemic or just wants their life back, to have the surgery. I am one week since and although there is still much discomfort, I can tolerate the pain level, and I feel better everyday. Started walking the dog again and moving a little more. Water, water, water, more water and foods with fiber are the best things you can take. Don't get me wrong, there's no way I can go back to work yet, but life is getting better one day at a time. Good luck with your recovery.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that anyone who says the pain the experienced post surgery for hemorrhoids was worst they ever experienced, have never given birth or had a kidney stone that wouldn't pass. I am on week three healing from full hemmoroidectomy (had laser surgery at 25, staple at 40 and I'm now 50). If I had it to do over I would have had full job done and stick to the dietary guidelines post op. Problem is, it's natural once pain is less of an issue, to return to old ways. Late night binging, sitting too long on toilet, yadayada. Anyway, good luck fellow sufferers and may your moves be smooth.

My doc had me on duclax and Metamucil and still I hadn't gone at 48hours so he said more duclax and it did happen. 1st ones are a total b&@&"tch but each day better I lived in the tub with a spa pillow, continue to warm up water and subscribed to netflix and amazon prime - passed the time beautifully

When I moved back to the US at 20 my Mom and brother would frequently eat at different Fast food restaurants and of course I would go along as to not have to cook for myself (as I have donde since I was 15). Big mistake, this diet change caused me to become constipated and I developed Hemorrhoids, BM with bleeding, pain and discomfort. Once again I switched back to my old diet of vegetables, fruits, fish, grains and occasional meats. Not only lost weight but my BM returned to normal, although the damage was already done. I devoloped an external hemorrhoid and it would flare up sometimes and I could see it because it just hung out there by the anus and never went back. Now I am 32 and finally told my husband about it and that he had to go with me to bring me home after surgery.  Went in, got it removed, came home (took about 2 hours total), and since I work from home on my computer, I didnt even take the day off. Had A BM a few hours after surgery and it was a bit painful and I took some pain meds.Day 2 of the surgery, a bit of pain this morning close to the time I had to take my medication, after that the pain has gotten better. It resembles the pain I have from a flare up, slightly worse. If I continue like this I don't think I will regret having the surgery even though I have experienced a bit of pain so far because the hemorrhoid is gone and I hope it never comes back.

Hello, so I had a hemorroidectomy 5 days ago and my GOD the pain has been horrible. I've had hemmis since the age of 17 and I'm now 33. With the birth of my kids they progressively got worse. I'm praying for a fast recovery and the ability to go to the bathroom with no fear. Because as of right now that is the worst part for me. As of today i probably wouldnt do the surgery again. But hey that may change in a couple of weeks. Hopefully you all hv speedy recoveries.

I had a hemorrhoidectomy one month ago, and although I feel fine now, the hemorrhoids are back. My hemorrhoids were internal, the ones I have now are external and palpable. The surgery was the WORST surgery I have EVER had, & that includes having two children, and my son was a difficult 18 hour labor. I don't care what anyone says, they are lying if they tell u it's no biggie. I woke up my 11 year old daughter one morning screaming & moaning-yes that painful. My vagina was completely numb & I hardly felt myself urinate. It felt like I had a 5 lb sack of sugar stuck in my anus, trying to come out, tremendous pressure. I can only compare it to being in labor, when the baby has dropped down the birth canal. I took so much fiber and stool softeners to get some kind of relief, & when I finally went, I pushed out two large, tampon like structures. I am told that was the packing material! Ouch! Even after passing that, pressure was still unbearable. I would say it was a good two weeks before I felt a ton of relief. Luckily I wasn't working at the time, because there is no way I could have gone to work. Sure, immediately after surgery it's not terribly horrible, because they gave you numbing medicine around your anus, which lasts a few hours. When you get home and it wears off, LOOK OUT!! I am a nursing student, & no stranger to pain, as I have had 3 lower lumbar surgeries with rods and screws. I'm bothered that that have returned (externally) for some reason. I will NEVER have the surgery again. There has GOT to be something better out there.

I am so sorry that you had a horrible experience but mine was really no biggie and I am not lying. I had surgery for Stage 4 hemmies. My doctor does not put packing in the canal so that is maybe why my recovery wasn't as painful as yours although I believe it definitely has something to do with your pain threshold. My doctor said I would be cursing him in a few hours but that never happened. My recovery was pain free for the most part and I am 2 months post-op now.

I was terrified about this surgery after reading these blogs.  I had surgery this morning to get two external ones removed.  Let me just tell anyone reading this, the pain is nothing like I thought it would be!!!  I feel uncomfortable, yes, but I'm not in agonizing pain.  Actually, it feels better than the actual hemorrhoids did when they were flared up horribly. I've only been out of surgery for 6 hours, I took two pain medicines, but I am not in unbearable pain.  I know everyone is different, but the fear of the surgery was worse than the surgery.  It might have helped that I went to a Dr. who specializes in colo-rectal surgeries.  He is National Board Certified in this.  I was literaally in tears last night after reading the horror stories.  I almost backed out.  I know I have recovery ahead, but the pain after childbirth is much worse than this.  Right now I am thankful I had it done.  Of course, I am on strong meds and I may still be numb.  Thankful!!!

i hope you're one of the lucky ones - but there's a good chance that pain has not yet kicked in for you yet - the local anaesthetics are still working, at 6 hours post op. If i were you, i would not underestimate the pain and make sure i stay on top of the dosing of pain meds (every 4 hours). I was walking around the house the day post op, until about 15 hours post-op, when i curled up and screamed in bed for pain. Good luck!

I hope things keep that way for you. I was still frozen at 6 hours post-op but I made sure to take my meds as scheduled and to never let the pain get away on me. Follow your doctor's instructions and don't cut back on your pain meds for at least a week. Start taking what you were prescribed now. Don't wait till you feel something. I was on Tramacet for a week and then I changed over to Tylenol but I am the exception it seems, to the rule with this surgery. I experienced only mild discomfort. Never any true pain although I hit a 2-3 at the beginnings of BM for about 3 weeks. Good luck and keep us updated.

I am really starting to question my decision to have surgery after reading through alot of the posts.  I have one large external one that I really want removed but have been battling internal and external ones for 14 years since the birth of my first child.  Sometimes it feels like there is a razor in my butt and I have blood when I have a BM which I have grown used to.  Currently I have major back problems that I use only large amounts of ibuprofen for and receive back injections because the pain meds they gave me cause constipation which takes me from my normal 3 BMs a day to none for a week and then the hemorroids flare up which takes around 3 weeks to get back to normal.  I am in constant pain from the back problems which reduce me to crawling most days but I would take that over the 3 weeks of torture of not being able to have a BM.  So I guess what I am getting at is how bad the pain will be after having one external one removed.  This past time I had a flare up I was able to get a numbing ointment that was the best thing I have ever used.  I only wish I had been prescribed this long ago because it made my 3 weeks of torture much better!  Anyone who has had an external one removed recently have any updates of how your recovery went?

No one can predict how you will do with this surgery. I worried a lot about the pain I was going to be in and it never happened. I have been told that I must have a high pain threshold, but all I know, is that I don't do pain at all. I kept up on my meds, and the most pain I had was maybe a two at the beginning of a bm. If the hemorrhoids are really bothering you, the surgery is worth it. My doctor said short term pain for long-term gain.
