Chateal birth control pills contain two hormones to prevent pregnancy from occurring, The two hormones included in this medication are progestin and estrogen. This medication basically works by preventing ovulation from taking place, reduce the likelihood of sperm reaching the egg by making the vaginal discharge thicker, and reduces the chances of a fertilized egg attaching to the uterus by changing the nature of the lining.  

This birth control pill may also be prescribed to help make the period more regular, reduce the amount of blood being lost during menstruation, in case of severe pain and cramping during menstruation, reduce the chance of cysts forming in the ovaries, or to treat acne.

Side effects of Chateal birth control

The most common side effects of chateal birth control include nausea, vomiting, alteration in the weight, fluid retention which causes swelling in the feet and ankles, tenderness of the breasts, headaches, bloating, some vaginal spotting in between periods.

The blood pressure of the body can also rise when on this medication and so should be checked regularly.

There are more serious side effects that occur far less commonly with this medication and require an immediate visit to the doctor. These include lumps in the breast, severe depression or mood swings, severe pain in the abdomen, heavy bleeding, or a yellowish discoloration of the eyes, skin, and nails.

Occasionally, fatal side effects like heart attacks, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism or stroke can also occur due to the formation of blood clots in the body. Any associated symptoms like pain in the jaw or left arm, fainting, shortness of breath, pain in the chest, dizziness, or sudden weakness must be treated as an emergency and the patient must be rushed to a hospital.

It is important to remember that this medication is prescribed because the side effects that occur most commonly are considered manageable and the benefits to the patient far outweigh those risks.


Any allergies that you might have should be informed to the doctor during the time of prescription so that any active or inactive ingredient in the medication that causes you harm can be avoided. If you have a history of suffering from blood clots, high blood pressure, depression, or other important medical conditions then they should be made known to the doctor as well.

This medication is meant to prevent pregnancy from occurring, however, it is not a 100%. If in case, you do become pregnant then this medication should be stopped since it can cause serious complications during pregnancy.

Hormone birth control pills can interact with a number of other medication and so a handy list should be kept with the patient to ensure no such medication is being taken. If you do end up going to the doctor for another issue while on chateal birth control then let the doctor know so that any unwanted drug interactions can be avoided.

This medication can also affect the lab results for certain test like blood clotting, thyroid, and others.
