I had mirena coil fitted by GP over 2 years ago.  Almost immediately had a lot of pain and a few days later heavy bleeding.  This was excessive and I stupidly just put up with it.  Spoke to GP a month or so later and she checked if it was still there.  It was.  Then months of terrible bleeding until another GP finally did tests and found I was so aneamic that I had to have a big blood transfusion (had become pretty poorly by this point!)  Then a scan revealed that the coil had been inserted into my cervix and not uterus.  A few months later I had an op to remove it and replace it.  This then slipped down but it was agreed that as long as it did not cause pain or heaving bleeding from damage, I could avoid another op.  Delighted as virtually no bleeding but the odd monthly brownish stuff in mucus for a day or two.  Then suddenly, a week ago, appalling pain in pelvic area and have been bleeding bright red quite heavily since.  Copable bleeding (unlike before when I was having to clean up work toilet each visit every hour) but not good. Have GP appointment for a few days time and wonder if it has moved as finally had sex after many years (separation and consequent breakdown).  Hope this will not mean another op.

I have had mirena for what will be 7years in may ( yes 6 whole years) i was previously on another form of birth control so periods have been far and few between. last period i had was when i got my previous iud removed and replaced012. since i have not had an actual period i get the tender swollen breast and occasional cramping.. the cramping hurts like a heathen but lasts maybe a day and i carry on but something feels different now. last week i was sick, had a cold and was given antibiotic and cough syrup and another pill for my throat. this week i have been tired irritable crying (im not a cryer) and craving.. a little back ground, i dont usually take a  number 2 everyday but all this week i have pooped at least twice a day. getting up in the middle of night goign to the bathroom but i have also changed my eating habits as of late so i thought it was due to that and this morning i woke did the usual and went on my day. it was around 9 when a hard hard cramp hit me and i couldnt stand it hurt so bad. i massaged it through my lower back and the cramps ease but didnt go away. my boos are in pain and then i feel something gushygo down my leg... well i head to the restroom and i find dark red blood that looks like tissue as i wipe its more and more and its long anf gooey like everyone has described...im not sure what to think of this....im ni the military and my fiance live 10 hrs away when i go home which has been atleast every three weeks  for the last 4month we definitely show our affection but we dont use any other protection im worried of what this bleeding could mean. i have read everyones story but whats different about mine is that the blood isnt bright red. i know dark blood means old blood but does it have to be brown my blood is red just a deep deep red and very thick. please help

I have been on the Mirena for 3 years now and have had bad periods ever since mine was put in. I am actually having it taken out here in a couple weeks. I don't think this thing is all that great as it was put out to be.

Cherellyn, did you figure out what happened. Almost exact scenario with me. Honestly, it looked like I had miscarried (sorry to be graphic) this morning.....

The doctor warned me about this when I got it. It was recommended that my husband get a vasectomy as well as follow up testing to confirm the absence of sperm.

I've had my Mirena in for about four years after my son was born, had a very complicated pregnancy due to high stress in the begining stages and the very fact I was very young. Now after four years I'm experiencing bleeding, unlike a normal period, it's lasted almost two months. But became spotting in between but about a week. Just very abnormal. The bleeding started after I had a bladder infection, possible kidney infection, and UTI; I have taken meds to care for it, and Frankenstein tons of water. But the bleeding is still forever present. I'm hopeful it's nothing serious, I read the propaganda waver in the begining which says the Mirena can become infected with a pelvic infection and arise further complications leading to surgery you may not be able to have more kids.
Im young, I just started dating again, and I only have one child. It matters to me to be able to know I can have one more go at it.
But two whole months of irregular bleeding makes cause for worry, and after a serious infection none the less. I haven't gone through with seeing a doctor yet but am making an appointment.
