I just hate these kind of message boards. Everybody answering with how they suffer from the same symptoms. What a waste of time.

I know this may end up nowhere but I also had the same pain. It ended up being my kidney. The artery going into the kidney had choked itself off and quit working. The Dr cleaned up scar tissue and reattached atery and it works fine. My Dr was convinced it was back or muscle pain. The only way I figured it out was it swelled up and I could feel it under my rib cage. Because the other kidney worked I guess it wasn't easy to figure out. No diminished flow. That was 30 years ago. Now its happening again. So back I will go and have an ultrasound. Good luck to everyone. It was a year of tests, pills and physical therapy. If I have to have surgery again I hope its not 6 weeks of down time again.

I am currently suffering from this. Do you have any advice? I get it about once every two weeks and it's been going on for well over 8 months now! They are really sharp pains which also feel abit like backache at times. For me it wakes me up at 3-4am and then I struggle to get to sleep for a good 2-3 hours or in some cases I don't get to sleep till the following evening. Did you find any solution for your problem?

I have this for over a decade, pain related to acid reflux and worst when lying down . I hade all the test and found nothing. Just a few things will help

A)do not consume too much food 2 hours before sleep esp anything sweet or too acidic or any beverages like coffee or strong tea. , alchohol

b) As one gets older , the digestive system is weaken so consumption of meat , calamari, cream , and any high fat or rich food like chocolates should be kept to minimum 3 hours before sleep., otherwise they sit in the stomach and causes acidity . Also take extra time to chew your food properly to ease the stomach having to produce acid to double work.

c) Reason why acid pushes up towards your throat is pressure so drinks lots of water and emptying your bowels prior to sleep will take some gas and pressure away

d) sSit up for 10 minutes and consume at least 3 glasses of warm water to keep the acid down

e) If hungry munch a small handful of sun flower seed or something with minimum fat.

If you still can't resolve see a natural path , you just need to find out why the acidity build sup in stomach, if it is digestive , taking anti acid is not for the long term  but do above only after all medical checks and prescription do not work at alla

Finally try to be stress free and calm it helps a lot

I have had the same problem for years every few weeks. Fine when I went to bed, but would awaken in the middle of the night with left abd pain. It would go away when I walked to the bathroom or when sleeping upright. Then, it started to get much worse and happened every night to the point where I wasn't getting enough sleep.

Recently, I started the paleo diet (no grains or legumes) just to lose weight and I found that when I followed it religiously the pain would dissipate after a couple of days.

I haven't been diagnosed with celiac or anything so I am not sure if its gluten or what. Maybe just general inflammation.

It comes back in full force when I even have a small amount of popcorn or other grains.

Hope this helps!

I have had similar pain on my right side While I sleep. Particularly when I sleep on my side. Originally this pain only occurred when I was sleeping on my sides, not when I sleep on my back. I began sleeping on my back and have noticed dramatic improvements to my ability to get a full nights rest. However, this is not a cure by any means. I went to the doctor after having amother night of pain. They ran a blood test and a oxygen "breath" test on me. Both came back with no results. I began to take things into my own hands and completed a liver and gallbladder cleanse. T

my doctor put me on a probiotic, align. This didn't do much for me thus far. I'm one week in so that might be why. My gallbladder cleanse removed 100's of bile sludge balls. Still my side still feels weird. I'm now starting a cleanse that is called completed gallbladder flush. Found it online. Next week I will see a doctor to get an X-ray taken to prove my theory that I have stones in there correct. I'll post results. Hopefully no surgery is needed.

I read a similar article on a different website and it turned out after years of testing, terrible distress etc. that it was the woman's gallbladder that needed removing.

Last night I had this condition.  The pain woke me up and I am still cramping in the lower abdomen.  I have no solutions but I do want to point to a few considerations I've learned about over the years as both a yoga teacher and massage therapist.  These ideas are only for your consideration, obviously, not a prescription, but something to think about:

1.  I ate a Hostess Cupcake around 8:30 pm last  night and drank a Mexican Coke (with cane sugar instead of Corn Fructose Syrup - a better taste, believe me).  I RARELY do this.  I've been gluten free for the most part since February of this year and haven't had this pain before this.  The pain was intense, but tolerable now.  Gluten affects millions of people every day and it is in everything nowadays.  Test yourself by going off of it for a while and see what happens.  Definitely eating at night and eating sugars increase your risk of developing a digestive condition like IBS or diverticulitis.

2.  Diverticulitis.  Colonoscopies usually pick up on this, and there also may be pre-cancerous polyps, which are usually removed at the same time.  So, its important to get this test, particularly if you're having this problem.  Yes, my last test showed both conditions and my doctor told me to be sure and eat more fiber.

3.  The psoas muscle, mentioned here, does get contracted sometimes and can be painful, but its not the same thing as intestinal or abdominal organ pain.  It will usually affect the side that's contracted, and its also usually caused by sitting all day long, as the muscle draws up from overstretching the back muscles in poor posture and non-supportive chairs.  There are a lot of stretches to help this muscle, but the easiest one is standing up with your feet hip width apart, put your hands on your sacrum (the big bone under your lumbar spine) and lean back a little bit from the hips.  You will feel this muscle being stretched.  Be gentle and breathe into it.

4.  Don't eat chocolate cake (like I did last night), or any processed sugars or glutens, wheat products, white flour products at night.  Ever.  Seriously.

Take care, feel better!

I suspected this since bile is produced and injected into the stomach from the gallbladder. So, I'm thinking my food was difficult to digest last night (I had a tough day and ate "comfort food" - chocolate cake with frosting and a coke - never again!). Wow, the pain! Going for a HIDA scan next week hopefully after I see a new gastro doctor. Its been painful to lay on my right side where the gallbladder is, but as someone mentioned above, I've also thought about my kidneys. They've always been a little sensitive, and I've had an infection there before once. Two whole weeks of bed rest! Take care of yourself people!.

Wowzers! I've been having similar problems of pressure/bloating on my lower right side of my stomach for over a year now. I'm 43 and have Hyper Tension and low Thyroid. The bloating/pressure happens at night after I've been laying on my sides or my back of my body but the pain I feel is mostly when I turn around during the night or when getting from bed. The right side of my stomach feels very heavy and full of pressure. The bloating/pressure goes away during the day b/c I'm not laying down. SO many wonderful things to look forward to as I get older....BLAH! My guess is that it has to do with my diet for sure but I'm not sure what I should fix in my diet, lol. Lately I have been trying to eat less but that does not work, I just get more gas and heartburn. It's definitely a mystery for now but it is annoying as Hell. If I find a magical solution I will definitely share it on this forum. :)

I have been having similar symptoms for a few years now and yep -it drives me crazy.  I recently went on a cruise and tried acupuncture.  That was fantastic and I had relief for about 3 months.  Unfortunatley I can't cruise every 3 months and there ia noone near here that practices it but I recomend giving it a go
