Me and my husband are awakened in the middle of the night. Usually 4-5 hours after falling asleep. The pain is in lower groin. Like it starts around our anal area, moves upward to lower abdomen. It feels like for me, a woman, like i am having contractions, moving back to anal area. I don't feel like I have to pee but getting and walking around usually helps to relieve how long it lasts. I have recently been to my Dr and had my yearly pap, all is normal. My husband has suffered this a lot longer than me and he is very healthy. I am amazed at how many people in this blog are awakened with similar pain, and it's only at night. Anyone who has found an answer, I think we would all be greatful to hear it

Hi, I was diagnosed with Celiac disease when I was 22 (I'm 26 now) and it changed my life, did you have an endoscopy or a blood test? Blood tests can be negative, mine was, then the endoscopy/biopsy of my small intestine was positive. Anyway I'm obviously on this question thread so I'm having the same problem as everyone else, but a gluten-free diet might make you feel a little better, I would try it. God bless you.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE LOWER ABDOMINAL CRAMPING, BLOATING, FREQUENT URINATION WITH OR WITHOUT BACK PAIN- THIS IS A URINARY TRACT/BLADDER/KIDNEY INFECTION.

I had pain like this for months and thought I had an STD, a tumor, some kind of weird inflammation. All tests were negative and I thought I was losing my mind. My whole belly felt swollen and heavy and I'm a very thin person so it was very strange to me. It didn't look puffy but it felt horribly swollen all the time. I told a friend how my lower abdomen (between belly button and crotch) was feeling heavy and hot, and how I felt like I had a rock on my bladder all the time, even when I didn't drink any fluids, and she said that she had the same thing for months and it turned out to be a bladder infection. I bought some UTI test strips at Walgreens for $10 and low and behold, it was positive. I'm on antibiotics now and looking forward to having a normal life and normal sleeping schedule. For those of you who have started to have lower back pain- get tested for a bladder/urinary infection IMMEDIATELY- infections go "up"- from your urethra to your bladder to your KIDNEYS. For those of you who are not familiar with bladder infections/UTI's, you can get one for any reason, too much sugar or alcohol in your diet, from sex (a little bit of bacteria going into your urethra), etc. It isn't serious if you treat it, but it can go to your kidneys and cause problems!!

God bless all of you, and go buy some UTI test strips!!!!

I have similar symtoms for more than 2 years now. Burning sensation in my stomach and lower abdomen at night. It wakes me up about 2 or 3 hours after I go to bed. It seems to worsen if I eat spicy food, drink alcohol or go to bed with a full stomach. I also had an upper GI endoscopy but nothing was found. Blood test, xrays, ultrasound and the whole works. I had some PPI presciption but not working. I wonder if anybody out there have the same expereince and what are the remedies.

It sounds like you do have either hyper-acidity, or a depletion of the protective mucosa in your stomach. Both can occur from eating the things that you mentioned over a long period of time, without cutting back. The good news is that you don't need disruptive PPI's to reduce your stomach acidity; just increase foods in your diet that are natural antacids, such as milk and things containing Potassium such as bananas and potatoes. I also encourage you to cut out the caffeine, alcohol, and fried foods. All of those things throw your system out of whack anyway; you could be feeling happy one day and not another, or have energy one day and then the next day be exhausted. Finally, to repair the mucosa in your stomach, I recommended that you get a good multivitamin that contains a daily recommended value of Zinc. Zinc helps to rebuild the mucosa in your intestinal track naturally. Take these measures, and pretty soon you will be feeling much better, and no just from a quick fix from a PPI...eat right and take your vitamins and you will be feeling better in a sustained healthy way. Good luck. -J

Hello J,

Thank you for your reply. I tested my ph balance and it seems to be normal. I think I might have depletion of the protective muccosa in my stomach as you mentioned. I am trying to eat yogurt for probiotec. I am also taking aloe vera gel and hope to repair the damage or depletion of the protective mucosa. I don't drink coffee or alcoholic drinks anymore. Thanks for your advice. elna

The best relation i can think of is in the film the last king of Scotland where the Ugandan primeminister presumes he has been poisoned. The doctor sorts him out by squeezing his stomach hard to release trapped gas. joking aside i feel like a strong poison is in my lower gut. i think its connected.

Hi Elna, I am glad that you are narrowing down your issue. That is what I did as well through research, and I eventually learned a great deal about the necessity eating right and the benefits of vitamins. I am not sure probiotics are worth their weight though; after doing some research, I think that they may only be good for a specific type of gut ailment, where you instead need to start rebuilding the protective mucosa. What built up the mucosa for me was taking the GNC Megamen multivitamin; it is the highest rated multivitamin on the market according to multiple sources and is one of the only vitamins that has been analyzed by the FDA; it has 167% the daily recommended value of Zinc, which I read is the key component that builds mucosa in the stomach and intestines. I know that the multivitamin helped out a lot, but I also know that when I started to learn how to eat right, I started taking in a great deal more nutrients and a great deal less calories. I learned things like how sugar is not only absent of nutrients, but consuming sugar makes us crave more sugar; what a terrible cycle. I even tested it...for about 3 days I allowed myself to eat as much 'Capt'n Crunch' cereal as I wanted (almost all sugar) and the result was that I consumed over 5000 calories per day for those three days. When I cut out the sugar, my calorie intake went back down to 1950. Also, if you get a chance look up the word "MicroNutrients." Learning about those explains why we can either eat a whole large pizza in one day or eat 3 small portions of healthy food and get the same amount of nutrients. I only mention this because finding the specific ailment is only step 1; the next steps of learning how to eat right will dictate the great possibility of literally 'curing' your issue with proper nutrition and felling better than you have ever felt in your life.  ***this post is edited by moderator *** *** web addresses not allowed***

I have this also. It's not every night, but sometimes it can be every night for a month and then stop for a few months. Have had this on and off for at least 10 years. It's not as bad sometimes when I lay on my back but I can't sleep comfortably that way. It's not gas, not pee. Only when I get up and walk around for about 30 min it will go away. It will be pretty painful, but when I BREATH.....oh my gosh it feels like I'm being stabbed in the stomach!!! Both lower left and right sides, same amnt of pain all across lower abdomen. Sometimes I think that it might be a little firm when I touch it but I'm not sure. Doctors don't take me seriously.

It is most likely inflammation caused by eating too much Omega-6 inflammatory fat, which is in many foods. This website does not let us post links, so do an Internet search for "Nutrition Data" to find the website; it will be the number 1 result. Use it to look up all of the foods that you eat in 1 day; it will tell you in the fatty acids section exactly how much Omega-6 fat is in each particular food. It also has an "Inflammatory scale," which is a good way to tell as well. Do a little experiment to see what happens if you cut out all of the Omega-6 fat for 3 days to see if that is what is causing your inflammation. If it is, then you will be pain free from this issue and sleep well for the rest of your life. Don't forget things like 2% or 3% Milk, which almost all the 2% or 3% fat in the milk is Omega-6 inflammatory fat; also watch out for things like potato chips and other food containing vegetable oil; vegetable oil has the highest concentration of Omega-6 inflammatory fat than just about any other food and is some times almost 50% pure Omega-6 inflammatory fat. A can of corn contains vegetable fat (vegetable oil) and has somewhere around 4000mg of inflammatory fat...well, you get the picture; look on ingredients of your foods and watch out for vegetable oils that come from Soybean, sesame, cotton seed, grape seed, walnut, safflower, corn, ect. You may find that anything over 2000mg of Omega-6 fat per day will cause you inflammation, and will become mostly noticeable in your stomach, intestines, and lower back muscles. The worst part is that Omega-6 fat is non-discriminatory with regard to what parts of your body it inflames. Good luck; let me know if it works. -J

Joseph, what you say is very interesting as I did have gastritis (inflammation in the stomach) near the pyloric valve. I'll check this first thing monday morning with my doctor. How did your doctor come to the conclusion that that was the problem? My inflammation was over a month ago but the pain at night still persists.

Meanwhile I'd like to try what you said about the Apple Cider Vinegar. How do you take it? Do you just drink it or delude it with water?

Thanks a lot!
