Like everyone else, I'm searching for info & answers to pregnancy & Adderall. I'm about 9wks pregnant after 8yrs of trying, well, we gave up a few yrs ago & I'm on a couple meds, one being Adderall. I'm almost finished nursing school & here's some info I know. All Medication is put into a Class (A,B,C, X) and was specifically created for determining the safty of a drug used during pregnancy. Class A is the safest, B 2nd & Class C means there's been no testing/studies done or there has and it's been proven to have a negative effect on a fetus in animals. Just because a drug may effect certain species of animals, doesn't necessarily mean it would on a human fetus. But the FDA wouldn't know that for sure without testing a drug on humans. Let's face it, there isn't many woman out there volintering to risk the welfare of their unborn child in the name of science! This is why it's so impotant to report your outcome to the FDA no matter what it maybe including- A O.K. to help them better understand the effects of a drug. So because there's no studies it's recommended not to take any Class C drugs unless your Dr thinks you need to. A Class X drug has shown to harm human fetuses and can't not be used at all during pregnancy. As most know, the 1st trimester (wks 0-12) is the most crucial time for development of important organs such as the heart, and if something's gonna go wrong it's usually during this time.
Goog luck to everyone on their quest for info & wish you all the best outcome!

"Adderall is an FDA category C drug. This medication may be harmful to an unborn baby. It could also cause premature birth, low birth weight, or withdrawal symptoms in a newborn if the mother takes Adderall during pregnancy. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Amphetamine and dextroamphetamine can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Do not use Adderall without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby."
"Long-term use of Adderall can slow a child's growth. Tell your doctor if the child using Adderall is not growing or gaining weight properly."
This is all from a medical website. I am currently taking 40 mg/day; I am afraid that I might be pregnant, only because I am a few days late, and usually very regular. Adderall is known to increase blood pressure, and that can be dangerous for both mother and baby.

I too have been taking Adderall (20mg BID-TID) for the past few years and found out last week that I am pregnant (currently 3 weeks gestational, 5 weeks LMP). I also drank a few times, enough to get more than tipsy... was frequently socially smoking and smoked marijuana a few times as well... I've also had several triple shot lattes... needless to say, I'm more than worried. Plus, I don't eat the healthiest or even that often and I had stopped taking my multi-vitamin because I ran out and just haven't gone to the store... I'm also 30 years old... and I didn't really plan on having anymore kids (I have an 8 year old daughter) so I worry about age being a factor as well... yeah, yeah I know 30 is the new 20 and you don't really need to worry until you're 35+, but it's my job to worry...
Of course I've NOT drank, had any caffeine or smoked anything since I found out... and I've cut down my Adderall to 15mg SID-BID every other day...
I've also had A LOT of nausea/morning sickness throughout the day for the past week or so... and overall generally feel exhausted, irritated and crappy.
I have an 8 year old daughter and never had that with her. THAT pregnancy was planned, so I never did anything before or during pregnancy that would harm her. She turned out to be perfect and super-smart to boot.
Any words of wisdom, advice or other experiences from anyone?

Hey. I have read all of the above postings and most of you ladies can rest assured. I took A LOT of drugs (illegal and RX) all the way into my second trimester not knowing I prego (bc my body is super irregular). To say the least I freaked when I found out....praying...doing everything to make sure my kid was okay. Well he is four years old now and healthy as hell.....# 2 on the way. lol. Calm down. Correct your mistakes. Eat organic and eat those vitamins. Babies are strong little people but they need mommys health to get stronger....thats all. xoxo good luck.
oh yeah dont get fat. :-P

Adderall is basically an amphetamine, and these have been studied extensively beginning in the 50s and 60s when they were often prescribed for depression. Babies of mothers who were on the medications were tracked for 30 years and no increased rate of birth defect, learning disability or other problem was noted in the children of these mothers. What they did observe was some increase in hypertension (high blood pressure) in the moms which can lead to preterm birth and those babies are at risk for serious complications. So, if you do take the medication, blood pressure should be monitored closely. If you already have high blood pressure or a history of preterm birth, it would probably be advised to avoid the Adderall.

Thank GOD for this blog!!! I just found out I'm pregnant for the 3rd time... a surprise. And I've been on Adderall XR 30mg one every morning for about 2 years now. I also have been on Cymbalta 60mg once daily for depression for the past 1 1/2 yrs. It has been the perfect combination. I have felt normal for the first time in years and function great! Of course my first thought was...."If I'm 7 weeks pregnant, What harm has this possibly done to my baby?!!"... I haven't been able to find much info. on either one of these meds. but I am taking the next 5 days to completely ween myself off of them safely. I know it is dangerous to stop them cold turkey. I will post whatever info. my doctor gives me ASAP for all of you who are in the same boat....I have 2 children ages 9 & 7, and both healthy and very smart. However I was NOT taking these meds until after my 2nd child so I am concerned. We gave up trying for a 3rd baby 2 years ago after trying for 2 years with no luck. So this is TRULY a surprise!! I am extremely happy though & pray my baby is healthy & unaffected from my meds.

Hello Everyone! :-)
I'm currently 24 weeks along with my first child, & so far everything is healthy & the way its supposed to be with my son. I was nervous to a pretty large extent because we didnt find out about being pregnant until I was already 8 weeks or so...In that time of not knowing, thinking back now I did; adderall, drank a little bit, & smoked [marijuana] :// I've stopped ALLLLL of that, for my son & for myself. I'm just hoping everything ends up being okay..I'm due April 15th.
I wish you all luck, & hope everything does/did turn out with your babies & their all healthy & happy:)

Happy New Year.
I just found out a few days before Christmas that I was pregnant with my first child. Over the past year I have suffered from sever depressive disorder and mild bi-polar symptoms. I found that all my medication was making me super tired and some days I could not get out of bed. Out of fear of loosing my job and my husband the doctor prescribed me adderall to level out everything. I had been taking 20mg twice a day for about 6 months and was taking it when I conceived. I have fears about my baby, but I also fear that if I don't take it I will never get out of bed. I see the doctor this week, and would like to have my ducks in a row of what to ask for that can help level out my symptoms. If anyone has any advice or suggestions, please let me know.
Thanks. Brooke

I stayed on adderall for 7 months of my pregnancy. I slowly reduced the dose from 40 mg twice a day to 5 mg throughout the pregnancy. My baby was born 3 weeks early ( I was induced because of his large size) and he was almost 9lbs. He is very healthy! Nothing is abnormal, and he is awsome! So, don't worry!

My cousin took adderall for a month or two before she found out she was pregnant and her baby is happy, healthy, and beautiful! She also drank alcohol those months, but kept throwing it up for some (obvious) reason. I think most babies are okay when exposed to these types of things in early pregnancy. My best friend just had an adorable baby boy and she also drank the first month as well as took xanax. I'm not saying these things will not affect an unborn baby, but I am saying that if you find out you're pregnant and you've been doing these things don't let it scare you. My fiance and I found out we were pregnant but I had gone the whole month drinking and doing drugs so we did what we thought was best and terminated the pregnancy. If I had known what I know now it would have been different. Please don't just assume what they tell you in high school about FAS and deformities is correct like I did! It is best to ask your doctor these questions, though! Good luck to everyone and I hope you have very healthy, happy, cute babies!

I have been on aderall for 10 years, I have a happy healthy 2 yr old and during that pregnancy I had taken it up untill about 6-8 weeks when I stopped cold turkey I was told the withdrawals were worse for the baby than actually taking it and next time just lower my dose...I was also drinking before I knew but once I couldnt stomache a beer I found out I was pregnant and only late in the preg. did I have a glass of red wine here or there....my daughter was born healthy with no issues...you cant change the past but you can focus on a healthy pregnancy now for your baby....9 months is nothing considering the lifetime you will be creating and affecting with your decisions..

I was also prescribed adderall and was wondering about the side effects it might have on a baby. At the time my husband and I were thinking about getting pregnant so I asked my doctor (He's a family doctor and not a specialist) what the risks were and if I should stop taking the adderall if we decided to start trying. He did not feel that my dosage (15 mg twice daily) was enough to have any effect on a baby and as long as I was gaining a healthy amount of weight and there were no complications I could continue to take the adderall throughout the pregnancy.
Latter surprised by an unplanned pregnancy, I remembered my doctor’s words and continued to take my adderall but lowered the dose to 7mg on weekdays and nothing on the weekends. I am now a little over 23 weeks along with no complication and the ultra sounds do not show any deformities. I imagine the effects on your pregnancy would depend a lot on how much your taking. I trust my doctor advice but like your selves I'm also looking for more information on the topic. However so far so good :-)
