I started taking ambien in 2007 it worked great other than the odd things my children said that I was doing. My daughter met me for lunch one day an said she had something to show me, I could not believe it was me so what they were telling me I was doing while on ambien was true, but I did not stop it. It's to the point I will take 1 and a half or more a night a month supply last a little over 2 weeks and I panic and stress until I can get it refilled, I've even had someone giving me theirs to get me by. It's just been in the last month or so I've admitted I'm addicted and I do not know where to turn and I am scared.

The Grand Mal seizures were due to the withdrawal of Ambien( stopping the medication abruptly). This would happen due to him running out Ambien too early. Both seizures happened within 24 hours of him having his last dose. And guess what? He's back on the Ambien. He avoids seizures now by replacing Xanax when he runs out of the Ambien too early. We found this out from the doctors that treated him for the seizures, that you can replace the Ambien with the Xanax, so your Gabba receptors don't get out of wack and you seize. My husbands life is basically over. He refuses to get help and is almost going on 4 years without a job, because of it. Like I said before Ambien is one hell of a drug!

I'm so sorry to hear about your situation (and your husband's).

I hope you can get him into a treatment center, and fast. Nothing short of this, plus a great deal of follow-up after it, will get him off these pills.

After using Ambien nightly (as prescribed) for seven years, I started taking it during the day whenever possible, for the high and also for anxiety release. At my worst I was taking 30-35 pills a day (yes 30-35 10mg pills). I've been to rehab three times this year, for 30 days each, with relapses in-between. I now have 92 days clean, and am living in a sober living house as I type this. I finally think I'm on a path to success

So, be prepared for a VERY tough road ahead. But it's worth it, both for you and your husband. Don't give up!!!

After 21 years of marriage Ambien was a major factor for our divorce. My wife also had the same effects. You are so right the effects are strange and unpredictable. I lost my wife and best friend to this drug!

My comment won't help u because you seem to only want bad stories. I had nerves cut, tendons cut and scar tissue removed in both feet. The surgery was a botch. This sole called bad med takes all my pain away at night no burning no pain. My neurologist knows it helps and is currently trying to find something so.Omar for day time since lyrica and pain meds don't work for me. I'm never tired on it never cloudy but I do have a different reaction to many drugs. Drugs that normally make you tired keep me up. This drug ambien has saved my life because knowing the pain will go away even if not all day is better than burning fire at night where I can't sleep. There are many positives about this drug. I'm trying to get a study on myself to help ppl who have severe pain. And I must mention to all those saying rehab if u told your doctor they would slowly ween u off. U should never go cold turkey it even says that. And if someone's still tired they r taking it to lAte and not getting enough sleep. Read the directions people.

Ambien addiction : I can only speak of my experience with mind altering drugs . I was sleeping but my mind kept right on working 24-7 . I saw a Doctor for my problem and he put me a number of different drugs .Mind altering drugs . All they did for me was to mask the problem ,i couldn't perform my job and didn't really care.
I was admitted to a mental illness facility for about 6 weeks and was to point of self destruction . I even prayed to not wake up before falling to sleep . That was in the 80's ,i had a lot on my plate and just couldn't get any help in the matters that were facing me . I was as many people have stated " eyes very light senative"
To make this story short
I quit smoking (cigarettes , drinking coffee loaded with caffine and other bad habits that affect the mind and phyical condition lof the body ) I have studied a lot of documents, read books, listened to other people and thier ideas on the matter of addiction .
I do have an advantage of age and experience .
My solution to my problem was how to learn to listen to the symptoms and what to do about . I gave my problems to someone else and now I feel wonderful . I don't worry about tomorrow ,because it will come or not no matter if I here or not . The problem has existed throughout the ages . My problem was not unique to
anyone else .
Turn it all over to GOD , " He is the LIGHT of the world and in him and him alone is no DARKNESS
That is my solution to my problems , Seek first the kingdom of GOD and his RIGHTIOUSNESS and all other things will work out for the best .
If we try to get our way it will cause depression , anxiety , nausea , bowl syndrome , Sleep disorder .GOD created this body that we live in and he can fix it if we ask in faith believing his WORD .
Look at it this way ,What have you got to lose and you could gain the whole world , or better yet, peace of mind.( a clear concience toward GOD ) .

My husband has the same problem. He will not admit that ambien has changed his personality and he gets highly upset when I can't get to drug store to refill it. He claims he only takes between 1/2 pill to 1 pill a night. What's so strange is.. He never really gets good sleep!! What's the use.. Why take something that doesn't help you sleep all night?? I'm really worried about him. His sister got him started taking it many years ago. What's so awful is that she overdosed on it and since a whole bottle didn't work. She committed sucide the day after by shooting herself. Like I said ambien scares me. I know my husband is not that messed up but still it worries me.

I have been taking Ambien for many years. A couple of years ago, I was going through some really rough things in my life & was taking up to (8) 10 mg at night & during the day. I just wanted to sleep & did not want to think about or deal with my situation. I got 2 DWI's within 1 month of each other. I finally got through the legal process & am on probation now. I spent 1 day in jail for the 1st offense & 3 days for the 2nd. I am paying for my misdeeds with lots of fines & my time in the form of classes & court appointed volunteer work.
I now take (1) 10 mg EVERY night (plus 3 Benadryl). I usually take at 10 pm, but it generally takes me a long time to fall asleep, but I am not working, so I can usually sleep in...I have tried to taper & I have tried to go cold turkey. I have gone 4 days with NO sleep & I was so miserable & of course sleep deprivation makes you "crazy". I absolutely DO NOT SLEEP AT ALL if I do not take Ambien. I did go through a period of taking (1) 5 mg & did OK, but when things get stressed, I end up taking (1) 10 mg. I have never used Ambien to get high. I do not use any drugs to get high. I have a drink occasionally, but my tolerance to alcohol is zero & when I do drink, I get drunk really easily & I find absolutely no joy in it. My prescribing Dr. told me that Ambien is more addictive than heroin. I have never heard or read that before, but this has me feeling completely hopeless that I will ever get off of this drug. I am so tired of the panic feeling when I am almost out & I don't have the money for the Dr. appt. or I have not planned well & I run out over a weekend. It may sound a bit wacky, but I would go to detox/rehab. in a heartbeat, even with my (1) 10 mg/night dependency, but I don't have insurance nor the money. I have read all about the different side effects & maybe I cannot even honestly judge myself anymore, but I definitely have a horrible memory & that it is due to years of Ambien dependency. I have tried all of the remedies like staying on a regular schedule, turning off the TV, taking meds like melatonin, Trazodone, Gabapentin, Seroquel, etc., etc.
