Autoimmune hemolytic anemia is a group of disorders in which body’s immune system produces autoantibodies, which attack red blood cells. Autoimmune means destructing it’s own cells and tissues and taking them as foreign structures. Autoimmune hemolytic anemia can occur at any age and women are effected more often than men. Autoimmune hemolytic anemia can be related to another disease, such as systemic lupus erythematosus, and after applying certain drugs, such as penicillin. It can develop suddenly or develop gradually. Destruction of red blood cells may stop after a period of time; or persist and becomes chronic. There are two main types of autoimmune hemolytic anemia: warm antibody and cold antibody hemolytic anemia, connected to the temperature of body.
