Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) is a type of anemia, insuffiecient level of red blood cells. In this case problem is nt in insufficient production of red blood cells, but in the body's immune system attacking its own red blood cells and destructing. A specific test, Coombs test, is used to determine presence of antibodies for red blood cells, which are produced in this disorder. Haemolysis can be intravascular or extravascular.Intravascular haemolysis means that red blood cell are distroyed in the circulation and extravascular haemolysis is going on in the reticuloendothelial system, where red blood cells coated with antibodies are destroyed by macrophages.
