Wow - I found this page just looking to see how long the itching and insomnia might last. I've been taking the very smallest dose (50 mg once a day) of Tramadol possible for the past 3 afternoons for severe osteoarthritis in my back, SI joints and hips. I get itchy from any painkiller, so I expected that and one Benadryl takes care of it and helps with the insomnia. I couldn't sleep before because of the pain, so I can live with that for awhile. It seems the majority of you started off taking 100 mg or more - I'm just curious if you tried the lower dose first. The ability to lay, sit and walk with pain at a 1 or 2 instead of a 9 is huge to me - for now I'm glad to be on it.

I was prescribed Tramadol for severe back pain, had been prescibed them last year and had no issues. 2 days ago I started my first dose, had some itching but didn't think anything of it. Took another dose before I went to bed. Woke up 5 am yesterday morning and my entire face was swollen. It was so bad that my eyes were swollen shut, compltely itchy and my throat feel thick.
Spent 22 hours in the ER being pumped full of epi, benadryl and steroids. Full blown anaphylatic reaction. Was released from the ER this morning and was told to keep an eye on the swelling because the drug can stay in your system for days. Still experiencing facial swelling even while maxed out on benadryl.
It is obvious that you can develop an adverse reaction to a drug even if you've taken it before without any issues. Continuing to take a medication that is affecting you only puts you at risk for a more dangerous reaction.

I have just found this thread and I had a terrible reaction to Tramadol too. 2 weeks ago I slipped a disc and rang the doctors to get some information about whether I should rest or try to keep mobile etc. He prescribed 50 mg Tramadol (which I told him I had never taken before).
That night I took 2 tramadol at 6 pm and they did'nt seem to have any effect. I took another 2 at 10 pm before going to bed. On waking in the morning and getting out of bed I felt extremely dizzy with a bad headache across the bridge of my nose and behind my eyes. Then the vomiting started and I did'nt stop being sick all day. I could'nt keep tea or even water down, so was concerned about becoming dehydrated.
I will never ever take these again, felt SO ill and my poor tummy still seems to be recovering 2 weeks on. My back seems to be on the mend and I have taken no more painkillers whatsoever.

Yes. I had an operation and felt I wasn't monitored properly, discharged and to cut a long story short ended up in a psychiatric hospital for a week. They said it was down to an allergy to tramadol And my details are on the nhs. database and I must carry an SOS talisman in case I am in an accident and emergency services can't get access to the info online. Scary stuff. I thought I was going to die and the effects are still with me now nearly three weeks later. I have been told I will recover but I will never forget this nightmare

Doc gave me tramadol 50 mg for shoulder pain, I took only one pill and got such pain and GI distress and I will not take anymore of them. The gut pain was so bad I could hardly straighten up to walk. I considered this a severe intolerance to the drug and am listing it as a drug reaction and never will take it again.

I had the same reaction. I was so bombed, high and threw up all day long. It took almost 24 hrs for it to go away completely... I'm still feeling out of it. This all happened today. I took it last night. I agree 200 mg which I was prescribed seemed way to high of a dosage for me. Oh, and my hip and back pain, it didn't help mask it one bit... Awful, crazy and suck a drugged out day. Scary actually...

If you have TMJ or any myofascial pain around your jaw or neck, be careful taking it because with some people it will make you clench your jaw and make the TMJ/MPS worse.

just found this thread.. i had a kitchen accident and accidently amputated the first inch and a half or so of one of my fingers. was perscribed tramadol for the pain. doc perscribed me 100mgs every 6 hours.
I took 50 mgs to be safe and went to bed. Woke up 5 hrs later and pain was dulled, I felt ok, a little sick to my stomach. Within an hour of being awake, I felt like I was going to die. I was so dizzy I couldnt move. Throwing up, shaking, sweating, vertigo, hallucinations, extreme sensetivity to noise and smell and lights and now itching. Everything itches.
I would rather cut off another finger than take a second dose. thank god I started at 50.
