Well I never expected this as I researched this same problem; a bitter taste in my mouth after eating. I considered dental problems and diabetes. Guess what, I ate pine nuts last week on a pesto pasta salad! Whooda thunk it?

i ate pine nuts yesterday and since then I have had a terrible bitter tast in my mouth that is worse after eating anything sweet. I think this is important information to get out as it seems to be a real problem. If it only is occuring after ingesting the pine nuts from China, Houston, I think we have a problem!!

Ditto to all of the above!

Bought my pack of mixed seeds/nuts (incl pine nuts) from Julian Graves. Awful bitter taste after eating or drinking anything - thought I was being poisoned! Found this thread and stopped eating them. Took about a week but taste has finally gone - hurrah!

I'm so relieved it was nothing serious. Would never have pinpointed the problem without seeing this thread. :)

Just wonder what it is that causes this problem

I cut this from Wikepedia. It seems this is a well known, and widespread problem, yet they are still being sold widely.

Risks of eating pine nuts

The eating of pine nuts can cause serious taste disturbances, lasting for days or weeks. The taste disturbance develops one or two days after consumption. A bitter, metallic taste is described. The pine nuts involved are always imported from China, but only a minority of Chinese pine nuts present this problem. Until now it is not clear which pine species is implicated. Concerning the cause, it has been observed that the pine nuts involved typically contain triglycerides formed by 16-18° unsaturated fatty acids. Analysis on pesticide residues and heavy metal did not reveal any contamination.[6]. Though very unpleasant, there doesn't seem to be a real health concern. The problem can be avoided by not consuming Chinese pine nuts. They can be recognised because they are shorter. The biological species of pine nut is normally not described on the package, however, the pictures of an European and Asian type of pine nuts are given to illustrate the general differences in form that can make the distinction.

Phew! I feel so relieved reading all this posts!
I started getting the horrible bitter, metallic taste yesterday. It's odd because over the past few weeks I've been eating pine nuts regularly then 3 days ago I had a ready made salad which contained pine nuts. They didn't taste quite as good as the ones I usually get - maybe they were from China?

I can't really enjoy eating anything now.
Is it taking about a week to stop? o.O who'd have thought it? Just from a few pine nuts!

Thanks for all your posts - very reassuring. :-D

I love pine nuts, eat them all the time and never had any problem...until about two weeks ago, when my wife and I had some hummus in a restaurant that had raw pine nuts on top. Sure enough 2 days later, both of us had the "bitter taste syndrome"...we were pretty freaked out until we id some searching on the internet and came across several forums where people mentioned pine nuts as the cause of the freakish malady. We were so relieved! Like I said, it has been almost two weeks now, and the taste is finally fully gone.
I have heard that it is a particular type of Chinese pine nuts that are the main culprit.
Why isn't this bigger news??? Why aren't more people talking about this??? Why isn't there some action to get these offensive nuts off the market?? (I personally am going to be more wary about eating any pine nuts from now on, since I will never know if they are the Chinese ones or not....)
thanks for the great forum

This is crazy! I also woke up with a bitter taste today, and googled it, and found this site, and low and behold, I ate pine nuts that were sent to me from my mom who bought it at one of those stores that sells them by weight. I have this horrible bitter taste in my mouth, and hope it will go away soon.

Interestingly enough, I am also an O blood type.

Strange. I am really happy I found this site, thanks!

I was also extremely relieved after identifying my problem. Still was hoping for some recommendations how to get rid of that bitterness.
I tried everything. Food is everything for me and I like to taste what I eat properly. I am disparate for the 3rd day.

How long does it last???

I too had pine nuts on Monday/Tuesday and last night and today (Friday) have bitter taste to back/sides of my mouth whenever I eat - like others have mentioned worse if food/drink is sweet.

I just want it to go :-(

I've had a bitter taste in my mouth when eating or drinking. I googled 'bitter taste in mouth' and came upon this information about pine nuts. And yes, I did eat pine nuts a few days ago. They were Chinese and may have been out-of-date.
