My father is 57 years old and has been suffering from high blood pressure for many years. He has a lot of extra weight and smokes too. I criticize him all the time, but without any effect. I somehow convinced him to go and see a doctor and he was prescribed with clonidine. I would like to know if clonidine can be used on a daily basis long term.

Yes, it actually can. This medication is used to deal with high arterial blood pressure by affecting central nervous system. It increases parasimpaticus which is manifested with hypotension and bradicardia. But, dosage has to be precise by already determined schedule and doses must not be skipped, because severe problems might occur (sudden jump of blood pressure).
