Hepatitis C (HCV) is actually a liver disease. It is sometimes referred to as the "silent" epidemic since it could be destroying your liver for years before it’s been discovered. HCV is one o STDs, but more frequent ways of getting it is via blood transfusion and injection drug use. Today even more than 300 million people are affected by this disease. This virus attacks liver and develops into cirrhosis while cirrhosis can eventually progress to liver cancer. Since in numerous cases the symptoms are not obvious and there are no complaints of the infected ones, the virus can develop in an organism for years. Those patients all of a sudden end up with end-stage liver disease, which is one of the primary indications for liver transplantation. The fact that there is no effective treatment only worsens the situation. Pegylated interferon combination therapy is used, although some researches show that it works in only 50% of cases of HCV genotype 1, and that is the commonest type of the virus. Even from these pieces of information you can conclude that hepatitis c can lead to death. The virus itself will not kill you, but the effects it has on the liver seriously affect your entire organism and lead to its decay and even death.
