Dentist appt yesterday afternoon for front teeth filling.  After the novocaine wore off sneezing and runny nose.  Still happening this morning.  My guess is it is related to proximity of injections to sinuses.

I also had the experience of large amount of novocaine and that night I woke up with a very sore throat. Now 2 days later I still have it. Also some running nose, but mostly just very sore throat. I also felt it must have been the novocaine. It was hard to find anything about it on the internet so was happy to see these posts!

This happened to me yesterday! I got 2 fillings and the dentist shot me 4 times in the mouth with Novacaine at 5 yesterday. My nose is still tingling and runny like crazy. When is it going to end?

Yep, Me too! Today, I went in for the 2nd half of my "Deep Cleaning" & when the Novocaine wore off, I had a sneezing attack & then (still now) this constantly running nose & stuffy head. Yesterday, with the 1st half of the cleaning, nothing like this happened...but he used a different type of anesthetic today. I called & asked if this was a common thing: he said he'd never heard of it, but when he was in dental school & got injections, his allergies would kick in & he'd get stuffed up, so I should be fine. My big question is: WHEN?

I had the same exact thing happen to me on Monday and it's Wednesday and I still feel like I have a cold. When does it stop? It started within 2 hours of the dentist appointment, crazy sneezing.

I left the denist today after a deep clean and I had 6 shots of novicaine. The appointment took almost 2 hours. About 30 minutes later my body felt fluish and achy and feverish. I just got over the flu 2 weeks ago, so I doubt I would suddenly get it again. Anyone else have these types of symptoms?

This also happened to me two days ago. I asked dentist about it and he offered up a cold. My question is when does it go away and I am looking for replies from a dentist that will admit this is from the procedure. It's the first time for me, and am wondering if it's from a different kind of novocaine?

We Are Not Crazy. I went to my dentist, who I have been seeing for years and totally trust, a few months ago for an extraction in the front. I have never had a reaction to Novocaine before, but I immediately starting sneezing and nose running. I had to go back yesterday for some follow-up work and got a shot in the same place (inside upper lip left side) and had the same exact reaction. Still feel like I have a cold - congestion and sneezing. It is definitely the Novocain into the sinuses. All dentists should know about this reaction - it is miserable and can last for days.

I think I agree with the proximity theory. I've had lots of Novocain shots before. But, yesterday I had one for my front tooth. And, before it wore off, I was sneezing and running nose. Weird, I had this happen with Oxygen in the nose about a year ago. Same affect. Lasted about 3 days. So hoping that is all it will last this time.

I'm doing the same thing. It's a allergic reaction to the numbing medicine. Mine is so bad my eyes are swollen and looks like I have been crying for days. Constant sneezing and nose running.

I have the same thing. 4 shots of anesthetic yesterday morning - when it wore off my nose turned on like a faucet and hasn't stopped since (over 24 hrs so far). Other symptoms include crazy sneezing fits - one lasting 30 minutes - and today a sore throat and sore, puffy eyes. It is really miserable! My nose is red raw.

I saw my Dr toady as I needed to see him about other things anyway and he suggested the following:
- antihistamines (Claritin or similar during day, Benadryl at night)
- neti pot
- nasal decongestant spray like Afrin (but only for 2, or max 3 days)

Most importantly he said to tell my dentist so that we can avoid this happening again.

He isn't sure what it is, maybe allergic reaction to the anesthetic, or trauma to the nerves.

Hopefully the above help relieve the symptoms and maybe they can help others who find this page!
