My wife has been diagnosed with carotidynia. She has a pain in her neck and face. At first she taught that it is migraine, but it wasn’t. I am worried that carotidynia isn’t a symptom of other, more serious disorder. What can you tell about my suspicions? All I know that the therapy she is taking is like a migraine therapy.

Yes, Carotidynia is a symptom to be regarded with suspicion. It is vascular neck pain and refers to throbbing pain of the neck and face with tenderness of the carotid artery. Recent publications suggest that carotynia is a benign complaint. And there are also some experiences which indicate that it may be symptom of a more serious disease. Several patients with carotidynia reported associated disorders like dissecting aneurysm of the internal carotid artery, spontaneous aneurysm of the common carotid bifurcation and giant cell arthritis. You should advice your wife to take this seriously and go and check her health.
