My warfarin has been increased and I have gained weight, in a period of a few weeks I can tell by my clothes not fitting, feels like I have put everything in the dryer and they have shrunk.

Yes, the weight gain caused by or in connection with the use of, or reliance on Warfarin is proportional to the increase in dosage difference.

I just started Coumadin after losing 24 pounds last summer following a stroke and changing my diet and in one month after starting Coumadin I gained all 24 pounds back without changing anything in my routine My face looks plump. It's almost like my body is retaining fluids. Maybe the body overcompensates because of all the thinning out of the blood?

Does it really thin your blood? Warfarin is often referred to as a "blood thinner," but this is a misnomer because warfarin and other do not actually "thin" the blood. There is a series of clotting factors found in your blood that help to form a clot to stop the bleeding. As such, warfarin actually inhibits these vitamin K-dependent clotting factors and other proteins to keep the blood anti-coagulated; part of the reason, and perhaps the main reason for the weight gain issues we’re experiencing.

I've been on warfarin for 6 months and I have put on 15llbs I'm eating healthier than I was before. I had my aortic valve replaced in December so I've only just started properly working out again but I couldn't understand why I have put so much weight on, it's nice to hear that I'm not the only one!

I’ve had Afib since 2011, and had to stop doing marathons and 10Ks because of it. The intensity of your workout isn’t sufficient to counter weight gain caused by Warfarin; you need to cut back on your carbs intake considerably, as well as your daily food intake to see some results. In fact, you’d have to put in the training of a long distance runner to experience weight loss, and you’re not able to. I’m on 62.5 mg/week, I jog 4.5 miles 4 days/week, plus the steps listed above; and yet, I can only get within 10 lbs of my target weight.

I have been on coumadin for almost 9 years. I was prescribed this along with metoprolol and lisinopril after I got a mechanical aortic valve and a synthetic aorta. My heart literally blew up for completely unexplained reasons. I have gained about 30 pounds, which seem to be stuck to me with super glue. No matter what I try I don't see much change. Maybe a few pounds here or there. I used to be an avid exerciser, but lost my energy and motivation after my surgery. I always attributed the weight gain to that. I will never medically be able to go without these drugs(thought they were forever drugs for everyone, shows how uninformed I am). The few times I seemed to have weight loss success are when money was too tight and I had to go without my meds. It is quite frustrating for me & I was so happy to find this forum and feel like I am not crazy for making this connection in my head.

So I'm looking to find the club who has weight loss with Coumadin, lovenox, and aspirin in general. So for me, this weight I have been carrying a long time is finally releasing itself with minimal effort in my part while I am taking blood thinnners.

I been on Coumadin for a year this past May 26, 2017 and I have gain at least 40 pounds. I take so much other medication and blood pressure medication so I did not know which one was making me gain so much weight until I read these articles about people who have gained weight using Coumadin. Now that I know which drug it is can anybody tell me a good diet plan I can use to lose weight. I have gain so much weight and do not even eat that much and barely eat sweets. I know I have to watch my Vitamin K intake and that alone is running me crazy. I just want the doctors to take me off Coumadin and get on another blood thinner with less problems. If any one can help me I will appreciate you so much. Thanks.

If this has never been studied, then it could simultaneously be true that there is an effect and that there's "no scientific evidence" for such an effect. I would ask my doctor whether they know of any studies actively testing this. If it hasn't been tested, then the more correct answer would be "we don't know".
