For the young girls on here (especially 12 and 13 year old): if you have not yet started your period and you are starting to get tan brownish discharge (without having sex before) it could be the lead up to your first period. I was 11 when I had my first period (I am now 40) and the first couple months before I had a full blown period, it was very light, not completely blood and I actually didnt realize that this was going on. 12 or 13 is about the average time you would expect to have your period anyways. If you have not had sex and have some some discharge this is normal! As your body cycles through the hormal process the type of discharge you are having is going to change. Typically, but everyone is different so do not take this as gospel, approximately 7-15 days after your period starts you will ovulate. The type of discharge you are going to have then is typically clear and a bit stringy, usually lasts for 1-3 days. As your body continues to cycle through the process, the discharge is going to change back to whitish, somewhat creamy in appearance. Like a lot of people have said on here, typically, unless there is a lot of itch, burning, smell, and chunky or overly watery discharge, it may be normal, dont freak out too much about it. When you have a full blown yeast infection, you will know! Your discharge will smell yeasty, like rising bread, is usually very thick and clumpy, and it will itch so bad you want to take a hairbrush to your crotch. Bacterial vaginosis can also start out the same way, but you can have very watery discharge and is normally accompanied by pain, burning when you pee- you will know for sure. BV is the most common vaginal infection, with yeast second to that. Sometimes doctors prescibe the worng medicines, misdiagnosing one or the other. Also, taking metromicanozole for BV (as like many antibiotics) can lead to a yeast infection and now you are flip flopping back and forth trying to get your vaginal pH back in alignment. Actually both yeast and BV can occur in non-sexually active individuals. Yeast and bacteria are always present in the vagina, when the balance gets out of whack thats what can lead to one of those infections or another. There are also OTC vaginal pH testing kits, onlys take a few minutes, the swab is very small and it can HELP determine if your vaginal pH is way out of alignment, causing greater concern to get it treated. If you are sexually active and are having a peculiar discharge, especially combined with pain, itching, burning, etc. you would want to go to the doctor. Google the CDC web sites on symptoms of STDs but it is really best to get checked to rule out anything else as sometimes many of these STDs can present the same symptoms. Especially when you are young, it can be scary or confusing understanding what kind of changes your body is going through, because I know when I was that age, I only knew my period was going to happen but no one really sits down and explains to you some of the other things that can go on with your body. If you are sexually active or plan on becoming sexually active you need to start going to the gynecologist, younger girls can get innoculated against HPV but should also get birth control. The best method really is condoms for STD protection or abstinence, but lets face it, sex is normal too! Its scary top talk to your caregiver the first time about you becoming sexually active or have problems, but going to a female  will be more comfortable and most of us have had to deal with these type of things. Hope this helps and puts some of your concerns at bay...
