what is this and is there a cure? How long can someone live with it?

Degenerative lung disease is differently called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
It usually involves two and sometimes even three lung disorders: chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Asthma can be present as well. Emphysema is when air sacs in lungs get damaged and making breathing difficult. Bronchitis is when bronchus get inflamed and cause excessive mucous production and swelling of the bronchial walls.
These conditions are most commonly caused by smoking, both active and passive-after living with a smoker for many years.

There is no cure and the aim of the treatment is to reduce the damage and control the symptoms.
Is there anybody in your family who suffers from any of these disorders?

Hello there.

Since Mark has already explained what you need to know there is no need to repeat his words. Are you just curious to find out something about this, or someone in your surroundings is suffering from one of these lung disorders. I hope that you have been just curious and that there is no need to seek additional information about this.

Also, in case that someone is sick you can share with us additional information. And when it comes to the contagious of these conditions, it is recommended for the first two weeks not to be in close contact with people you love and know. Good luck anyway.
