I'm 22 and have been having sinus problems for years. I just had surgery yesterday to fix my deviated semptom and open up and drain my sinuses. The process goes like this. Two days before my surgery the pre surgical screening nurse called me and got a medical history on me and gave me some instructions such as don't eat after midnight and show up two hours before your scheduled surgery time. When I got to the hospital I checked In they took my insurance information and put an Id band on me. Then it was a waiting game. they will draw blood on you if you have any health problems or if you take any medications. If you are a women you need to pee in a cup and take a pregnancy test. Then you wait again. They will call you back into the pre op room ask you to change, hook you up to their monitors and start an iv. After that is done your family can come back there. The anesthesiologist will come talk to you ask some questions. Then the medical doctor will ask some questions listen to your heart and lungs. Then the surgeon will come talk to you. The nurse will come back and give you sedation Through your iv so your relaxed when you go in the OR. For my procedure I was under general anesthesia. They will roll you back in the OR put a warm blanket on you because it is cold in the room. You will move over to the Operating table and they will put a belt around your legs and your arms. Then they will put a mask over your nose and mouth and ask you to take some deep breaths...then it's nighty night. They put a tube in your throat that Breaths for you, but it is put in and taken out before you wake up. You wake up in the recovery room and your mouth will be extremely dry. They gave me a medication to dry up any secretion in my throat to help the drainage. When you wake up the nurse will ask you if you are in any pain and will give you iv medication to treat the pain. My mouth was bloody when I woke up from The procedure. When I woke up more i was given ice Chips. They put nasal packing in to help with the bleeding and to keep the sinuses open and they taped gauze under my nowe to catch the bleeding. I had no nausea when I woke up. I was in recovery for a few hours. Once I was completely and my vitals were stable they moved me into phase two. They put me in a chair and offered me a snack. They take your iv out and check your vitals one more time. then I could get dressed and got my discharge instructions. When I first woke up after surgery I was in a lot of pain. The pain isn't bad just a bad headache and the packing is very uncomfortable. Its hurts to talk and swallow and you can't taste anything. I go today to get my packing removed.

I had the surgery twice. 6 years apart. And its been 7 years since the last one and I have to have it fixed again! I do not want to have it done again because of how bad it hurt the last time. It like being hit in the nose with a mack truck. Im just being honest. Im scared to have it done again. Any words of encouragement?

I just had the surgery on Thursday October 25 2012. As outpatient at Henry Piedmont Hospital. I was scared to death. But got there and everyone on staff calmed me. My Doctor she is great. Told me exactly what would happen and the whole process from start to finish. I got knocked out completly I hate pain. After in recovery I awoke with a small bandage on nose as a drip pad. i went home feeling pretty good. rested first and second day totally. Hubby took care of all. I had NO pain what so ever. Just badly congested. I did have a headache for days due to congestion though. I am on day 7 after surgery and still feeling pretty good just congested. I went yesterday and doctor Blanca cleaned nasal passage and suctioned. totally could breathed through nose for hours. But congested today. I dont why I was so afraid. Well I do I am a googler big time and the stuff on the net is total BS for this surgery. I had no bruising and seriously no nose pain. I did however hit my nose in the night and it sent a shock in me, needless to say I try not to do that anymore.

Omg thank you sooo much! Yours was most helpful. I go in Oct 22 to have mine done and I am soo scared!
There is no need to be scared. It doesn't really hurt just feels a little tender to touch. Main problem is feeling really stuffy. I had some problems but then I bleed easily but please don't be scared. There are some real wimps out there!!!
I hope your surgery went well for you and I'm glad I was able to put your mind at rest. Best wishes

I just had a septoplasty and turbinectomy ( they shaved off my turbines in addition to cutting away and straightening my septum) on Monday. And to be honest threads like these had my extremely frightened going into it. But I'm doing absolutely fine ! I am on narcotics for pain but an anti nausea medicine I take with it has kept off side effects.
I was in recovery for 45 min, even had a Popsicle because your throat does get sore from the breathing tube they use ( which they put in and out while you're asleep) I had gauze taped under my nose with a 'moustache sling' for two days ( i had to change the gauze every hour, actually my very sweet fiancé did, but it didn't hurt ) but they DIDN'T have to PACK my nose NOR did they use a SPLINT, just a dissolveable mesh I can't even feel. It helps to have someone help you eat and take meds too, because I have a minor nose bleed everytime I stand and I nap about twice a day for 45 min. but no pain and I can already breathe through one nostril.
2 other things to keep in mind;
1. Every person is going to react to any given surgery differently, a healthy person recovers faster. I dont like water but i drank water until midnight before the surgery and I drink fluids all day long since ( g2 Gatorade and lots of tea), and I know Its made a big difference because I've had another surgery ( more minor in fact) a couple years ago in which I didn't focus on that and felt much worse then.
2. LOVE your doctor.I went to an ent ( I know some ppl had bad experiences because they just went to general surgeon). But this was my second one, I had a consultation with one who couldn't remember my name , treated me like a number , and told me recovery would be many weeks and would include painful ' scraping appointments' he was an older man... And I just felt like he had old school methods . Even though I'm 24, I ended up at a Pedo ( child's ) ent recommended to me by a nurse friend, he was much younger ( but still with 17 years of experience) and because he had kids of his own his goal that he actively discussed on his website was to continually learn new procedures to make recovery for any ent surgery faster, because kids don't like to be down right ? In fact when I told him the other drs plan he looked at his nurse and laughed out how unnecessary that sounded.

Hi, I just recently had the surgery on the nov 15. I am back at work. What to expect? Well with all surgeries you can expect a splint on your nose for a week. You will have gauze taped under your nostrils until the bleeding subsides which takes about two days. Your face will swell up and eyes will bruise and swell too. You will feel tremendous pressure. I felt pain on the 2nd and 3rd day after but took meds and it was tolerable. You will not be able to breathe through your nose for about a week or so. After a week you will feel some pressure and you will not be able to touch you nose from the soreness. Overall I had a great doctor and the recovery has not been so bad. My doctor is Dr. Garrett Bennett in NY. I am happy about getting the surgery. when I am able to breathe through my nose I can feel the big difference.

My surgery is scheduled for 12/5 and I am going to be seeing a plastic surgeon at the hospital I work at. Does anyone have any experience with having the cartilage sown tighter for cosmetic reasons? I am really scared....

I had septoplasty yesterday. There's hardly any pain to speak off. You feel pressure around your nose, and my teeth feel a but funny (slight temporary nerve damage) but that's all. I had to wear a nose bandage for the first 20 hours after surgery as I was trickling blood, but now that has stopped I'm just left with an irritating stuffy nose. If your doctor recommends surgery to correct your deviated surgery, go for it. the benefits far outweighs the risks and post op discomfort.

:-DThank goodness for someone else, like me, who isn't a wimp. There is so much scare mongering going on this forum for this surgery. I hope others will read your and my posts!
