I went in to have Septoplasy and Polyps removed on 11/20, but when they got there they also wanted to do a biopsy of a lymph node behind my left ear. So I was rocked... The surgery it self was'nt painful, but the recovery is still a pain. I was told I'd be out of work for a week, but ended up just returning to work 2 days ago. My breathing is a hell of alot better, but I still can only smell occasionally and was told that I may never regain my sense of smell completely. My sinuses are extra sensitive now and I cant stop my eyes from watering. My front tooth still hurts like hell from time to time, but I was told that was to be expected. Although my symptoms were severe and I'm glad to be able to breathe properly and sleep with my mouth closed. Possibly due to me being Type1 Diabetic my recovery is taking a little longer than anticipated. Depending on how severe your symptoms are I would thoroughly explore my options before having this surgery. Thats my 2 cents...

Tomorrow is my scheduled day for surgery. So far the only thing I am worried about is staying out of work for weeks. I think I can take that pain but a lot of people tell me that it will hurt when they take the packing out. Well I hope everything goes good. I will come back on tomorrow. 01-03-13 is the scheduled date.

I can't understand and never heard of cutting you from your nose to your naval cavity. Did they do this internally cut down the back of your throat to your stomach? Did they have to put a drain in there to get out the blood. How long before you could breathe normally

Same here.. I also had surgery in 2007 even that time i was not facing any trouble like sinus, headache.. only my one naustril was getting block in winter season. Doctor told me to go for surgery. He suggested me to go fo plastic surgery also with this deviated nose surgery. He said he will give good shape to my Nose but i and my husband decided only to go for deviated nose surgery. After surgery i can say i was feeling 70% better but from 2010 i got sinus trouble and my nostril is now more worst than i had before surgery... Now i cant imagine again to go for surgery...I am facing big sinus, allergic trouble. If anyone is aware about other medication except surgery, Please help me...

Hello Abbi,
Thank you for your post. I am having my surgery on February 26, 2013 and I am scared to death. I am going to have the septoplasty and scrapping. Reading your post made me feel a bit at ease on what to expect. You are right, every person reacts to surgery differently and I hope that I feel as optimistic after the surgery as you did. I needed to see these posts because I've heard people say that they stuff gauze through your nasal passage, which horrified me to say the least. Seeing your post made me think this won't be the case.

IOWAGUEST:
Your response is so terribly myopic and rude. Who are you to say just because your experience went well that others have not listed valid and true points about their procedures?
I went to a very well respected physician in the NYC area. It was a nightmare procedure. There was a lot of packing and it was painful - not to mention terribly uncomfortable. I consulted multiple surgeons before and no one mentioned an easier procedure - ALL mentioned they would "break the nose" but from inside so no outside change in appearance.
I agree with KellyInAlbany - I woke up crying and crying.
My throat burned for days.
I also had a TIA during the procedure and the doctor and hospital I was in were terrible - they didn't call a neurologist or do anything about the stroke except put me in a room, unattended because I was complaining about one side of my face and the opposite side of my body being limp. And, because I recovered (2 year process), I wasn't able to get a lawyer to help me sue (the first year was the hardest and having gone through what I did I needed someone to advocate for me - I had trouble walking, functioning, you name it.) Instead of telling others to put on their big girl panties - open your mind, increase your perspective. Your perspective is from a far too lucky life. you are terrible - seriously terribly myopic.

I had surgery on 26/2/13 steptoplasty and turbinoplasty, feeling fine now, not to much pain just feels sore like a very bad cold and you have been wiping your nose a lot ( a lot better than I thought) so i recommend you go ahead I can breathe for the first time in years (and my husband said I don't snore now

I am going on Monday 4/1 My Dr told me that they do not pack anymore. No Black and blue around the eye area and you will only need tylenol the next day. I have faith in this Dr. I was told that I would feel stuffed up for a few days and that would be it. Just have to squirt saline up my nose 5 times a day and gently wipe. just to keep everything up there moist. If I thought for a minute that they would pack me, I would absolutely NOT have the surgery. Years ago my brother had it and was packed.....He said it was torture and would not have done it had he known. He also had a bump on his nose fixed so I think if your have additional work (Plastic surgery) You may have to have your nose packed. I wouldn't even think about anymore surgery then is necessary. Just hoping that it works for me. I'm a BIG baby and I'm not really to nervous. which scares me! LOL

Just had mine done 3 hours ago. No they did not break my nose. I had a 95% blockage on my right side. In and out of the hospital. I have a headache and a little nauseated. So far so good.

Everyone seems to have a different experience. I assume that its because of what is going on with each indivdual person. I was very lucky. No pain whatsoever. Just stuffiness from the dried blood in my nose and wanting so badly to blow my nose. No splints or packing. I has deviated septims on both sides. One very bad, A benign cyst removed and my sinuse were 100% blocked with Puss. (SORRY! GROSS) went to the Dr. 4 days later and he suctioned alot our. Now using saline mist and saline gel 3 times a day. Have to go back in a week because as your healing more scabs form and the dr will suction them out. In the end, if the surgery works for everyone it really doesn't matter how your recovery went. Good luck to all.

My son "18" was just told he will need the surgery, and all I know is that when I saw the pictures of the "deviated septum" it was very deviated. However, he has not complained throughout the years of not breathing right or dry throats or symptoms I am reading about. I am very nervous for him and was wondering if all deviated septums have to be fixed with surgery. Of course we are having a second opinion but I am praying that he does not need this surgery. I cant imagine anything with the nose and breathing through your mouth being to comfortable at all.
Any opinions or suggestions are greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
