Hi, folks. My brother has been having symptoms like sneezing, hiccupping and making some strange voices since he was a kid. My parents didn’t pay much attention at first, but now his doctor sent him to a neurologist suspecting he had Tourette syndrome. I would like to ask how to diagnose this syndrome. Thanks.

Hi. There isn’t a specific test that would diagnose Tourette syndrome. A doctor must rely on the history of patient’s symptoms. In order to diagnose this, both motor and vocal tics must be present for at least a year. This syndrome’s symptoms are often very similar to other problems. Eye blinking can be mistaken with vision problems. Sneezing is often linked with allergies. Since tics and movements can be a result of other serious conditions, a doctor should rule out these conditions as well. He should run some blood tests, MRI, CT scan and EEG. I hope everything will be all right with your brother.
