Does anyone else find they become the slave to their training schedule, trying to hit the planned miles for the day or week even if their body is trying desperately to say take a break or the weather is just not cooperating enough to let you run what you planned?
How do you deal with it, knowing you have a race coming up in about 3 months?

It bugs me if I'm training for something, but I'm okay missing a run or two (I think I missed 6-10 planned weekday runs for the marathon, but I hit every weekend long run).
Right now I run what I can and if I switch a day or miss a day, it's fine.

I feel really guilty. And like a slacker. And then I worry about the next day's run.
Like yesterday, instead of running 6 miles, I ran 2.5 on some trails. While it was a much harder run, and a different run, I came up quite short on mileage. Sometimes I try and make up miles on the next day run, like today I am going to attempt to run 8 miles instead of 6, but I'm not sure what I will do.

Other than long runs, I don't plan distances before hand. If I know I'm doing med. distance runs on Tues/Thurs I'll go anywhere from 8-12 miles depending on how good I feel, time constraints, etc. I also adjust pace based on what I'm feeling that particular day. IMO, if you are feeling like a million bucks on a particular morning you should take advantage of it and push yourself. If you feel like c**p, adjust to that and do what you can do.

I've long lost being anal about my schedule. If I miss a day, so be it. Or if I'm feeling like roadkill, I'll get on the rower or commute on the bike and call it a full day. Generally, I give myself two days to each week I can waffle, and as long as I hit four good runs per week, I'm happy.

When I train on my own during the off season, I never plan out runs more than a day ahead. That way I don't have to worry about sticking to a schedule.

This time around with my marathon, I'm going to be a slave to my schedule. I know I was hitting my long runs on weekends last year, but I was not consistent with my weeks. A lot had to do with what was going on in my life last year and the lack of focus on it. So, this year I am following Hal Higdon's Intermediate plan almost to a "T". I'm not kidding. I might flip flop some things to accomodate to my children, but otherwise, no.
I have always been able to maintain a certain milege each week/month. That's never been my problem. I know what miles to make up to get there by the end of the week.
This time...no way. I want it all planned out where I can say I put in exactly what I needed to put in. Once the AZ RnR is over, I relax a bit.

to me the act of running is more important than the time or distance. I plan no further in advance than the next day as I do not know when I have to stop for days upon a time due to Abby. I get more joy out of running than stressing over not running.
