I am having surgery and need to be on opiods for one week. How long after I stop the opoids can I start back on suboxone?

rebb,
That sounds like a question better suited for your doctor to answer. Sorry, I don't have a better answer for you, because everyone is different. You don't give much information.

Good luck :-) ,

Thank you allgood for responding. This is the first time I am conversing with someone on a site. I just wanted to say I had been on suboxone for two years. I was a chronic relapser after having fourteen years of sobriety. I have to have surgery and I just wanted to make sure the suboxone would not interfere with the medication they give me. I am off the suboxone right now as my surgery is in one week. I had thought seriously about stopping the suboxone altogether but it helps with pain relief. I have multiple sclerosis and have chronic pain with this condition. I decided for me it would be safer and better to be on a lower amount of suboxone then opiods. thank you again for reaching out! Hi Rebb, I think it would be a good idea to discuss it with your doctor because I think that they might be able to put you on a painkiller or something like that that isn't an opoid. It might be a better idea for them to do that so that you don't undo all the good that you've been able to do taking suboxone instead. Have you discussed that with them so that they now about being on suboxone? Please let me know how you're doing. Thanks!

rebb,
You can start Suboxone after you go into the first stages of withdrawals, after stopping your brief opiod treatment.

Good luck with your surgery. I know exactly about struggling with an opiate addiction, so I feel for you.

Hi allgood!
by the way what a great nickname. thank you so much for replying I will assume that would be 12 to 24 hours later. forgive me if I do not sound like I know alot about this subject considering I have been an addict for twenty years. I had fourteen years of sobriety and then relapsed. I was working as a therapist/social worker than was diagnosed with ms got real depressed etc. etc. etc. I have been on suboxone for two years and thought about stopping it but with my pain I feel I am better off staying on the suboxone. This time I will not go on such a high dose. I realize I do not need so much. My concern is how am I going to deal with the withdrawals if I have to have surgery. Anyways I know you didnt ask for this much info but I am pretty real and down to earth. thank you so much for caring.
Lets keep in touch. Its pretty cool being able to converse with someone on the computer. Believe it or not I just started using a computer four or five months ago.
Good Wishes to you allgood! :-)

I know that mixing Suboxone with other medication is not a good option. But if you are going to have a surgery, then the best option for you would be suggestion that your doctor gives you. It is important to be clear with your doctor what can and can not you do. Mixing drugs can lead to drowsiness, sedation, unconsciousness.
So consult with your doctor and you shouldn't have any problems during the surgery.
