Hi. My name is Tammy. This is my first time on this site. I am hoping that someone can please help me with my concerns I have. I am currently on suboxone and have been for almost 3 years. I am on suboxone due to addiction to pain pills. I will be having major surgery very soon!! I know I am going to need pain medication but I also know that if I'm on suboxone, the pain meds will not work. I don't know what to do. I was wondering if I should stop taking the suboxone a couple days before my surgery or will the suboxone still be in my system?? I have no clue what to do. I just know that my dr told me to expect to be in alot of pain when I wake up. Has anyone ever had surgery while on suboxone or did anyone stop the suboxone before the surgery and if so, did that help any?? I really do hope to hear back from some people. I am so lost and don't have a clue as to what I should do. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Thank You so much. Tammy B.

Hi Tammy,

Tell your doctor and anesthesiologist NOW that you are on suboxone and why.   Remind them every step of the way.  Do not wait to "surprise them."  They can try to find a drug that is compatible and isn't likely to cause addiction.

Stopping suboxone may not be a good idea.  You don't want to be in withdrawal while undergoing surgery.

Hope it helps.
