Hello. Congenital heart defects are not always present in kids with Down syndrome. However, incidence among these kids bigger than among healthy kids. The incidence among general population is about 0.8% while among population with Down syndrome is 50%. There are three categories of heart defects that can be expected here. Those are: atrioventricular septal defects; ventricular septal defect, atrial septal defect and patent ductus areteriousus; other complex defects. Kids with heart defects can be managed with medications, but some of them require surgery. I am not sure which category your friends' baby belongs to. I hope everything will be all right. Bye!
