Hello, my older sister had her ileostomy surgery three months ago and since her husband has a chronic condition too, I'm staying with them, helping her adjust to this completely different life. What we've been having the most problems is her ostomy bag falling off or even worse leaking just slightly, but enough to cause awful skin problems at the ostomy spot. Nurse that came by to advise us helped a bit with teaching us how to use ostomy powder and then makes sure to protect the skin with two layers, and she is suggesting we should get an ostomy belt that should help keep the bag in place. We haven’t yet successfully figured out how to prevent bags from completely leaking, but is there a chance that ostomy belt really might help us? Also, is there maybe a chance that we’re not using the right type of bags or are still using them incorrectly?

Hello!  I am sorry to hear of your sister and her husband's difficulties.  They are very lucky to have you to assist and care for them in their time of need.  If your sister is mobile (up and moving around), the belts will definitely help.  They are helpful because the belt secures the bag and keeps it from hanging from the part that adheres to the skin.  It can help prevent leaking as well since the bag won't be pulling away and causing a gap where feces can escape.  I believe getting a belt would be a great investment in keeping the bag intact and prevent any further leakage problems for your sister.  Good luck!
