As a big guy. I had an MRI scan today. I got a shock they scanned a ball joint injury. 20 minutes to half an hour. My arms were touching both sides of this cylinder. I ended up trying to shrink myself so I would not touch the sides. I was not on any painkillers or medication at the time. I got through it by using breathing techniques and meditation.

I just walked out of the hospital because the MRI machine was, obviously, malfunctioning as I've had MRIs before and never experienced the shock that ran across my hands, arms, legs and felt like it was burning my skull from the inside. I squeezed the ball, the tech came out and said, "the machines been fine all day..." I ask her what the hell is going on and she says, "I heard if your legs are crossed you could make a current in them. Maybe that was it?" What the f**k school are these people trained at? It took me googling "shocks during MRI" to figure out what happened!

I just had a brain and cervical spine MRI today. I've had many in the past but this time I felt a shock on either side of my chest toward my arms. It was only during the cervical contrast part and I had no legs, arms, hands or eyes crossed! I do have a stent in my LAD. Did that have something to do with it?

Hello MRI tech,
I got an MRI today and during the first ten minutes, my feet were touching. I was also wearing a sports bra that is not cotton, as I was trying to avoid wearing an underwire bra. I did feel a heating sensation across my chest at some points during the scan. I'm just wondering whether I should be worried about internal thermal burns.

2013 I had a MRI done and I had that electrical sensation in my head like talons were scraping my scalp. My heart Dr basically yelled at me and said to quit freaking out that I was interrupting their work. He said I was closterphobic and having a panic attack. I was not! I was so angry with him that I did my own research and even called a MRI specialist half way across the country at a bigger hospital. It's called peripheral nerve stimulation. I went back and told my heart doctor and showed him my research. He was mad at me and said how dare you....you can't just call other doctors blah blah blah. I said how dare you tell me how I feel and don't feel. For thinking I'm stupid and can't do my own research. How dare you for having a god complex and your bed side manor really sucks. Needless to say I went to another hospital. He now longer works in this state and other nurses and techs told me that he was a miserable person no one liked to work with him.

I had similar reaction to the MRI. Can you point me in the direction you took for your research?

I had an MRI for my neck too. The techs told me to fold my arms over my stomach and cross my hands together. I felt static shocks like tiny pins poking the surface of my body. I wasn't sure what it was from...possibly static electricity from my body hair?

Had a breast MRI today with contrast. To do this, you are positioned face down, arms over your head, breasts hanging through two holes. When the MRI started, I felt what I can only describe as the sensation you get from a TENS unit, or nerve stimulator. It was shooting through my left and right buttocks every time the low sound started in the MRI. very bizarre. Tech did not really have an explanation other than, "yeah that happens to some people". I can say that I am one of those people who can generate an electrical shock from walking across a concrete floor and can't even hold the metal handle of a grocery cart because of the electrical charge it generates. I do not have any metal parts in my body that would conduct. My feet were not crossed.

The same happened to when I had my first breaSt MRI. I have had back surgery on my lower back and the shocks felt like they were going through my lower back to my siadic never on my left side. I had nothing crossed and my tech and everyone I have spoken woth said they never heard of this happening before. It hurt so bad I never want to repeat this procedure. I have had other MRI's done wth no pain. I dont k ow why this one was worse.Thank you for putting your information on here. I will share with my doctor.

I had to have a cardia MRI a few years back. This happened to me as well. I could feel my hair moving in circles and a static shock feeling just inside my hairline. The area affected was about the size of a quarter. The techs had to stop. I was going into a full blown panic. They asked if I had any metal in my head, which I don't. They then blamed it on my "electric personality". I was like you, blamed those aliens. I had redness and tenderness for about 2 weeks after that. There is a possibility of me having to have another MRI tomorrow on my neck and shoulder. I'm so nervous.

Omg , oh my days not going mad or crazy . I had MRI scan on lower back and left knee yesterday as I'm not joking as soon as I out of the scanner and on my way back home I started to feel more pain than usual and it got worse and worse, I couldn't even stand sit or lie down cried myself to sleep. I had to get assist from my son and partner to help me get around . The pain was immense in my knee that I just couldn't walk and had to use my second crutche to support my gait but even then I still couldn't walk and at the end I put ice blocks on lower back and left knee to freeze the pain and calm the inflammation. This helped a lot.
I've never experienced anything like this before regards to MRI scans and so confused and left feeling sick . I honestly share you pain and experiences . So sorry you all had to go through the same c**p. If only someone was responsible enough in the medical field to explain what happened.
I will be discussing this with the consultant next review appointment.

I had an MRI yesterday and I too, experienced electric shock when my fingers were interlaced across my abdomen. My abdominal muscles contracted and "twitched" throughout the procedure, even after I separated my hands. My shoulder and back muscles also contracted involuntarily. The whole procedure (which took 45 minutes) was extremely uncomfortable. I was taken out halfway through and injected with "contrast" which made matters worse.
As the day progressed I became extremely nauseated, my head and neck felt like they were on fire and I had a terrible headache. I actually had to leave work I was so sick. No one informed me of the side effects and the techs said nothing about not crossing any body parts. I had a cervical MRI.
