I had 2 MRI's today. A Cervical with & without contrast. Also a Theroaic spine with & without contrast. Between having both done back to back I was in the machine for 3hours. The last hour I began to have what felt like electricity shoot through my fingers. I honestly felt they were on fire. Plus what I find odd is the Radialogist tapes a Slim Jim across my back before my MRI. Why use a Slim Jim? Actual food??? I knew she was tapping something but there was someone getting my IV ready at the same time so I was distracted and didn't ask what it was.. Has anybody else ever had them tape a actual food to you before your MRI? Seriously

I had an MRI a few days ago. I had nothing crossed and I got shocked through out my body. My right side was the worst. The scan was focused on upper right abdomen. I have had scans before never had that experience they were a walk in the park. This really scared me.

I had a breast mri today and had constant jolts of tingling on my lower back hips . The shocks were felt on either side and changed as the sounds changed. It was bizzare. The tech says
It happens rarely so they don’t mention it. But why?

I had an MRI scan today which produced a similiar feeling to that which you described happening through your scalp. I felt a buzzing sensation in my brain which was located in my frontal lobe specifically to the right side of my forehead between the eye and the scalp. The stronger the magnetic pulse, the more intense the electrical shocks became. I asked the technician if this was normal - to which he replied, "I've never known this to happen to anybody before!"
I thought to myself, "Cheers for that mate!"

I just got back from meniscus scan and had the tingling/burning in my knee. Nothing was crossed. Tech could not get clear pics because my knee was twitching. Tech attributed it to pain, but now I'm reading these posts I don't want to go back!

There are MRI scanners that actually have wider bores than others, it depends on a few different factors. I have spent the majority of my radiology career working on GE scanners so that is my greatest experience, hence I will describe the information I do know about. First the newer GE the system with higher software platforms actually have wider bores. Which make it a little bit easier on those patients with a larger body habitus. The next option for you to consider is a low field unit that is called an Open air MRI which allows the larger patient to tolerate the MRI a bit more comfortably versus the high field units that are a bit tighter for the larger patient. The anxiety the occurs when feeling "too tight" or anxious is a serious issue that many patients experience. Not all patients respond the same to anxiety or claustrophobia. The reactions vary from a bit of nervous feelings up to requiring anesthesia to be put under with IV medications. Each patient has their own feelings and should always be addressed and considered with their physician When I perform an MRI on a larger patient I make an effort to raise the patients arms above their heads so they have just a little bit more breathing room. If the patient is still uncomfortable and unable to tolerate the exam oral sedation will be the first step. If this doesn't work then the patient discusses this with their physician about additional sedation, open MRI machines IV anesthesia or a different type of radiological procedure such as CT, US, Nuclear Medicine , it all depends on the diagnosis or disease they are attempting to confirm with your exam. So if the first attempt didn't work or it was just too uncomfortable to tolerate again because it has left such a bad memory never fear there are still multiple options for you and your doctors to consider. Hope this helps!

Yesterday, I experienced the same exact thing (had done before, no problems). Half way through I started to feel, "the sensation", told the tech, she never heard of it, minor pain discomfort. Second, 6 minute, imaging was much more painful. With the sensation, when the machine would change sounds, my pelvis would involuntarily spasm, jerk to the right. I told the tech. She never heard of it and then I left. Pain got worse over the next few hours with sadness and dysfunction. Now it has subsided, to a terrible 7. I feel like I've been in a car accident, only in my lower back, pelvis area. I'm also on the verge of tears multiple times a day. I had to cancel an event I've been looking forward to for a long time. I'm now left in terrible pain. Very strange!

Hi,
I had a brain MRI today.
I had my fingers locked. I had the same experience. A painful electrical current started in my left shoulder, went down my left arm and started to cross to my right fingers. At this point I realized that this was not comming from my left arm raficulopathy. It had crossed to the right hand. I immediately called for help. The tech said it was because I had my hands crossed and is very rare.

Once I uncrossed my hands the electric shock was gone, but now hours later, I have twiching and pins and needles on my arms, hands, face and trunk.

My concern is that it may happen without crossing anything. It could be life threatening it reached your heart.

The same thing happened to me... not sure why they were all surprised and have not seen anyone get shocked the entire time. I am exhausted from, and literally feel wiped out.

I had a definite sensation of mild electrical shocks during MRI of my lumbar spine at Mass General Boston. Only during certain parts of the scan, every time the machine made a noise, I could feel a tingling sensation in my arms & shoulders. Also a slight involuntary muscle quiver, presumably caused by the shock. This was not my first MRI, but had never felt this before. The techs were quite pleasant but skeptical. I’m not claustrophobic or anxious.

I did an mri of the brain and the technician told me leaving on my buckle shoes was ok because they wouldn't be in the machine. During the mri the unit shuttered. The technician did nothing. I was surprised as it was a noticeable shutter.

I had an mri several years ago. I felt a sharp painful ZAP into my lower right hip… I screamed it hurt so badly. The techs poo-poohed me and back in I went. Afterwards I checked and had a big red spot where i was zapped. Since then I have pain all the time in that area. Many times the pain goes all the way through to my overuse… it feels like… from my back to my front… the pain is persistent for years…. What is that? I have no metal in my body and no body parts were crossed…????
