My old mother has been having lots of headaches and vision problems. When we took her to the doctor last week, he informed us that he suspected that she could have temporal arteritis. He has now ordered a bunch of tests including ESR. What can I expect for my mom?

You seem like a very loving son. Your mother is a very lucky person. The ESR measure the time it take for so called erythrocytes to reach the bottom of a test tube. This is done in a lab, and all your mom needs to do is provide her blood. This is a minimally invasive test. I hope everything is OK with your mother.
