Here's the deal. While I was in Chicago this last weekend DH called and said my Mom was taking Gramma to the ER cuz she was bleeding. I talked to Gramma who said her Dr. said go to the ER and expected it may be a kidney infection. So I'm thinking the blood is coming from one place, right? So they admit her but she is now saying the blood is coming from the rectum! 8O OK, easy mistake I guess. I'm not real alarmed yet cuz over the past 5 years Gramma has had hemorrhoids and would sometimes tell me that they would bleed, seeing quite a bit of blood when she would use the bathroom. Yesterday she called me saying the stomach Dr. or what ever they call him wants to go down with a scope and have a look. I said sounds like a good idea. In the meantime Grammas Dr. comes to the hospital and says no, send her home. :? He wants her to now come to the clinic today to give blood for lab work, take a urine sample up tomorrow and see him on Thursday. He still insists on a kidney problem? WTF?? If the blood is coming from the rectum can it possiby be from the kidney?
I will go with her to the Dr. on Thursday but should I call him today and question his logic? It makes no sense to me, but then he's the Dr. Whaddaya think?
Sorry for the details guys.

You can try, but they may not tell you unless she specifically names you as someone to release information to.

Then sure, call him. You may be getting information second hand that she's confusing. The more YOU know, the more informed decisions you can help her make.

I have seen the release papers from the hospital. Her Dr. is thinking kidney but when she says the blood is coming from the rectum I don't understand the reasoning by him. He did not examine her at the hospital. :?

Always ask. Someone may be confused.
Once, when I was 16, my mom was in the hospital after having had major back surgery (back in the old days when it wasn't so nice and neat and quick). My mother couldn't even move from the bed, had just returned from surgery earlier in the day. The nurse came in with 3 laxatives. Said the doc had ordered them.
I was terrified, but I confronted the nurse, and she went and asked. She came back embarrassed and apologizing, saying there had been a mixup.
Please ask for clarification's sake.

Things are so close, it's possible she isn't entirely clear where the blood is coming from.

call him now and get clarification.
the scope procedure is fairly routine, but it is not an easy one to take. maybe he's just trying to run interferance in any other direction before they actually do that procedure. i mean, it's not the worst thing she'd go thru but it's probably better to start with bloodwork anyway.
call him.

Good point, but still check everything over. Remember - when I had the tooth die on me last year, the ER initially determined I had a neurological disrder. Symptoms, while sincerely considered, can still be misread. The more info, the better.
