Bruce - if you are healthy enough for he surgery my advice is to do it. You will be under general anesthesia. Post-op is a bit uncomfortable as you will be catheterized and your bladder will be being flushed for about 12 hours - but this is not a major ordeal. If you are like most of us Holep will be one of the best things that ever happens to you - scroll back a catch my recovery/progress posts and those of others. Godspeed and I will be praying for your successful surgery. Big500.

Hi Bruce,
I'm 70 as well. I had my surgery 3 weeks ago today by Dr, Das in Philly. He's an associate of Dr. Lingeman and like Dr. L has done well over 2000 of these procedures. All I can say is that after 3 weeks the only way I know I had the operation is that I didn't get up to pee until 7:00AM this morning. Previous to the procedure it was 3,4 or 5 times a night. No pain, no weakness, some pink drops of blood the first couple of days after catheter removal. Now nothing but pee. I am so glad I made the decision. I hated the 3 days of the catheter but even got an erection with it installed so I didn't feel so bad. My prostate was 166 grams and he removed all but 50 grams. I go see him tomorrow for my followup. If you are healthy enough to have the operation (i'm sure they did bloodwork and EKG) go for it. You will not regret it. Bob from SJ

By all means listen to your Drs. Advice. If he says you are able , have the surgery. I was amazed how easy the recovery was post surgery. I wore a depends through the night just in case, and I got some much needed rest. I wasn't up all night catching myself. I was 58 when I had mine. I went back to a strenuous job after 2 weeks off. just me

Hi Big
Sorry for getting back late to answer your post. I've been having tests run at the DR the past week. I have been cleared to go have the surgery with Dr Lingeman on June 1st, one week from today. Thanks for your encouragement.

Just checking to see how your June 1st surgery went. Let us know. We are here for you. I have a question for the more experienced members. I'm 5 weeks post-op and once in awhile I'll have a "pink lemonade" pee. It's very light and maybe happens once per day or every other day. I'm wondering if it could be caused by my being a little too physical with work around the house. Since my procedure I've had no pain or incontinence. Ejaculated once as a test and the only consequence was the "pink" pee afterwards. Always have a good stream and only wake at most once per night. Should I call Dr. Das about the "pink" pee or is this a normal occurrence in the beginning?

Hi Bob
Thanks for asking!
Just got back home to Florida tonight after having the Holep procedure with Doctor Lingeman.
He is a great guy and talented surgeon. The entire staff at the hospital both in recovery and back in my room for overnight stay were terrific.
Dr Lingeman took 2 hours to do my surgery and said my prostate was very large. I had the median lobe of my prostate obstructing the bladder neck were urine empties out. He removed 100grams of my prostate, about 80 %.
OK so how am I doing? I'm pretty tired form the experience but it went well. I can pee like a racehorse already, the stream is large and extremely forceful. There is no stoppage once the stream starts and it appears like my bladder is completely empty. This hasn't happened for me in15 yrs.
Now the only real difficulty I am having is just at the end of urination there is an incredible painful somewhat burning like sensation almost deep in my prostate that lasts about 5 minutes. It seems like the pain is coming from underneath between the scrotum and the anal area. Even when I sit down it hurts in that same area. I am hoping this is not something that will last to long at least at this level of pain.
Id like to hear from a bunch of you guys who experienced the similar pain as this at the end of urination.
Thanks Bruce

Bruce. I had the same pains. Its spasms of the bladder as the stream shuts off. Could take a few weeks to go away but rest assured it does get better. Took me 10 weeks to not have any pain at all. Worth it in the end.

Thanks Ed for your info. It's good to know that the pain and discomfort will subside over time.
I also have some swelling , redness and soreness at the tip of my penis which I assume is to be expected with the surgery and large catheter inserted. The tip of my penis does sting when I urinate and also as urine drips out thru-out the day due to some incontinence from the surgery. I expect that as the inflammation to my urethra quiets down the stinging and discomfort will subside.

Yes, that will all go away. Mine had all the same symptoms. I used pads for about 10 days and then didn't need them.

Yes it all gets better and goes away. You're in good shape. Try a little hydrocortisone cream on those sore spots. They will be gone in a day or 2. Good Luck. Bob from SJ.
