Unfortunately Tretinoin is a prescription medication so you have to visit a Dermatologist. I recommend asking for the Tretinoin 0.025% which is the weakest strength. This way you won't irritate the lips. I applied it every night at bedtime for about three weeks and noticed a great improvement.

Unfortunately Tretinoin is a prescription medication so you have to visit a Dermatologist. There are many brands and I am sure they aer all the same, just default to what ever the Dr. recommends. However, I would suggest the 0.025% strength because lips are very sensative and you dont want to irritate them too much.

Ugh! I've had these things (well since I started noticing) for months and they're driving me crazy. I read jojoba oil works on them. Yeah no. Either they've gotten worse on their own or the oil made them worse. I've also tried the Blistex Lip Medix someone recommended. There's more and more of them now and I'm afraid they'll soon cover my whole lips. It's making me so depressed. I was standing in the lip care section at the drug store just praying for a cure. I'd give anything for one.

This is so crazy!! I started noticing the spots on my upper lip about a mouth ago and it's getting worse. I have an appt scheduled with a dermo, but honestly feel that it will end up being a waste of a co-pay.

I looked at the following site (***edited by moderator*** web addresses not allowed) and was wondering if anybody has tried this stuff...?

Signed,

In misery with you

The only way to get rid of them is by laser vaporization. No cream will help you trust me i tried everything.

Fractional Co2 laser is not the only way to resolve fordyce granules. Retinoid creams have shown to work very well. 0.025% Tretinoin is the most commonly prescribed for this. In addition to this Rx consider the relationship between your oil and sweat glands, and your diet and daily habits. Diets low in saturated fat and oil, and mild skin cleansers/ creams can help reduce oil production. There are some websites that offer Tretinoin without a Rx; in many other countries beauty supply stores sell this product without a prescription - it will be expensive, though.

i had CO2 laser done on my lips last april 19, 2011 and i couldnt be happier with the results. the scabs on my entire lip started falling off by the third day altthough i would have occassional bleeding as well. by the fifth day all the scabs are gone and my lips just seems like there were some puncture marks but by the end of the week they were gone and my lips are beautiful once more. NOT 1 spot remained, i guess im lucky my doctor was thorough. Btw, i was prescribed to apply Bactroban ointment for the 1st week and now im applying a laser cream which was formulated by the clinic which i will also apply for one week. Guys dont lose hope! So far CO2 laser works, i guess it would depend on your doctor and the clinic. im from the philippines and i think im the first one to have it done here coz even i had to bring it up to my doctor and had her do research on it. we even did a trial session on one spot but it really hurt and i had my entire upper lip was clustered with spots so we opted to have me sedated for the whole operation. i had to do labworks first before being cleared for sedation but the effort was well worth it. during recovery, i stayed home most of the time but when i went out i wore a mask over my lip area and tried not to stretch out my lips when laughing, eating etc, even had to use a straw so as not to disturb the scabs and prevent bleeding. i make it sound horrible but really it wasnt much of a discomfort and the payoff is well worth it. i just thought id pay it forward to all of you since ive been down there like you guys and have tried the jojoba, tretinoin, etc...research on it and consult with a certified dermatologist.

How long did the effects of tretonin last?  I've heard they come back as soon as you stop.

Hi! I just have a question. My spots aren't so bad, but I am really afraid of them getting worst. If I decide to use this cream during the night, what should I use to keep my lips moist during the day? Since dryness is what causes more spots? Pls help! Thank you

I noticed these spots on my lips about 2 weeks ago. Im currently using anti-sebum in the mornin and before bed and applying Apple cider vinegar once a day at about 7pm. Nothing has yet to happen. Anyone tried the anti-sebum and had luck? If this doesn't do anything im going to tretinoin.

I've been using tretinoin 0.025% since Thursday night it's now Tuesday I have not noticed any improvement yet. In fact I still think it is getting worse! How long has everybody used this before noticing results? And did you use it with an alpha hydroxy acid agent? And how are you dealing with the dry lips? I've been using blistex but this is oily I want a non-oil based lip balm. Anyone know of a god brad to use?

Hello friends.  I had fordyce spots on my lips - three large ones on my lower lip, and maybe 40 some on my upper lips, ranging from miniscule to large.  I think they appeared while I was wearing a beard for a year or so, and maybe had more oil in my skin than I should have.   Anyway, I was able to get rid of them.  Here's what I did.

This is what you'll need:

A magnifying makeup mirror - 10X magnification is best, but 6X will work fine too.  You can find this at your local drugstore.

A pack of sewing needles.  There should be a variety of shapes and sizes in the pack.  I found this at the craft store.

A cigarette lighter.

A candle.

Alcoholic cleaning wipes

A desk lamp, for extra light.

Pointy metal tweezers.

Orajel numbing creme.

Optional - a shot of whiskey or half a vicodin

Medicated lip balm.

The procedure is pretty simple.   Seat yourself down at a table, and prop the mirror up on something so you can look into it comfortably.  Light the candle.  Shine the reading lamp on your mouth, and check out your lips in the mirror.  Apply some orajel, it will numb your lips and the moisture will protect the skin around the area you're cauterizing.  Start by selecting a larger needle.  You'll want to target the largest spot first.  Heat the needle in the blue part of the candle.  Don't put it in the yellow part, or you'll get residue on it.  Take the needle out of the flame, and press it firmly into the spot.  You'll see a little puff of vapor and hear a small hiss as the needle vaporizes the ointment, the outer layer of your skin, and the oil in the gland all at once.  Hold it there for three seconds.  Push the needle in firmly so it destroys the oil-producing gland that's causing all your trouble.  It will hurt for about half a second.  After that, remove the needle and see how much better your lips look.  If there's dead skin around the puncture you made, just grab the tweezers and pull it away.  Pick up your needle again, wipe it off with an alcohol wipe, heat the tip in the candle, and target the next spot.

After you run out of big ones, start targeting the small ones.  If they're packed really close together like mine were, you might have to hunt for ones that are far apart from each other.  You'll want to switch to a smaller, sharper needle for these.  Be careful, because the shorter needles heat up faster than the larger needles, and you can burn your fingers if you hold the end in the flame for too long.  They also lose their heat faster, so you've got about 4 seconds to get it from the candle to your lips before it becomes too cold to do any good.    When you're finished, apply some medicated lip balm to keep your lips moist so they can heal.  You'll want to keep applying it for the next couple of days until the skin has healed.

Once you do three or four, the rest becomes easy.  I did about 20 in my first sitting.  Then I went upstairs to take a nap, because of the whiskey and vicodin, which are really unnecessary but might help you overcome the initial fear of burning away tiny bits of your skin.  After I woke up, I came down and finished the job, bursting about 35 spots total in a single afternoon.  Your lips will heal completely after two or three days.  It's been a week for me now, and I don't see any signs of scarring.  There are maybe 20 spots left, and these are the tiniest ones of the lot.  They're too tiny to really notice, and I only see them when I'm looking into my 10X makeup mirror, so I haven't bothered going after them just yet.  I will keep you posted on what happens in the future.
