I used to have stinky sneezes but about a year ago figured out the cause....coffee. For me, I would drink coffee after brushing my teeth (and tongue), instead of before. For some reason, I think the coffee sits in your gums and tongue all day and causes the stinky sneeze. Brush after you drink coffee. It worked for me!

This 15 YO hit the nail on the head. This makes me think that the issue is related specifically to bad breath. I've been having this issue a while and I think the best description of the smell is a muscky pollen type.

I've never had any throat surgery or such. My oral hyiegene is not perfect, but I brush 2x daily.

I have the same problem and a few of my close friends have commented that I smell somewhat like "cheese". They said it doesn't smell terrible, but just kinda odd and unfamiliar.

I have been to 5 different ENT's around the Houston area, and all of them say that they can't find anything wrong with me. I have terrible post nasal drip, but no signs of an infection or any structural problems in the nasal region.

My latest attempt (today, actually) at solving this problem was seeing an allergist/herbalist. The specialist seems to think that I have a food allergy, either to dairy or to wheat. I am getting a blood test done tomorrow and they are going to send the sample off to a lab in California. It costs around $350 for the results, but apparently they will be able to determine what I am allergic to, whether it be from a food or some other problem in my environment.

ALL adults are lactose intolerant, whether they know it or not. Some people have stronger reactions to dairy than others and this is when tonsil stones are produced. For anybody suffering from tonsil stones, cut dairy out of your diet for 60 days and you will no longer experience them. You will have to live your life without dairy, but if you want to get rid of them forever, you MUST cut ALL dairy loose.

I am thinking that my problem is coming from wheat though. If I drink beer, I notice the smell intensifies like crazy. If I eat a sandwich, the smell gets stronger. If I eat any kind of sweet or dessert, the smell increases.

I am going to bookmark this page and come back and update my situation once I get my lab results back.

IN SUMMARY: If you are very much effected by this, check your diet! Your diet is linked to so many illnesses and ailments. Sinus problems, diabetes, MS, skin problems, a lot of cancer... ALL can be fixed with a great diet.

Good luck everybody!

Katie Momma, you may very well be correct. I started noticing that my sneezes smelled bad around the time I started college. During my second semester of college, I noticed I had these white spots stuck in my throat. I went to the doctor to see what the white spots were and he told me that I had tonsil stones and that it was quite common for people in their twenties to get them because they apparently have more cracks in their tonsils or something? Idk, but that's what he said. He told me that it was basically food stuck to my tonsils that had hardened. Gross, I know. He also said that I could try drinking a lot of fluids, especially while eating, and to brush my throat. I do drink a lot of fluids while I eat but it doesn't really seem to make a difference, they show up when they want to. As far as brushing my throat, I can't because I would throw up.

I think I will stick with the netipot. It works to clean out the sinuses where the smell comes from. A particle going up the nasal passage or dust going up the nose for example is what causes a person to sneeze. Yeah, you might have some water drip out of your nose for a bit after cleansing it. but, it is so much easier to breath afterwards and reduces sneezing.

I was reading these post and your situation is the same as mine so glad to know those nasty little grayish things actually have a name. It's also nice to know there is something that can be done. Thank you for your post.

I found that after I get in the truck with the A/C blowing really cold, and I've been outside, I sneeze several times and its the musty smelling sneeze.  Ive had it for 10+ years, comes and goes irregularly.   Also, I smoke weed every day.  Always wondered if it was related.   Smells like a fungus/bacteria to me.

I also have this gunk not going down my throat but stuck between my nose and my throat and making my life a misery. I cant swallow it or spit it out - and my throat gets sore trying to swallow it. When it gets really bad I get bad acid reflux too. Sometimes I feel I will suffocate from it. My ear nose and throat doc says it is from my stomach and yet all the medication I have received doesnt even tickle it. I also have had it for around 40 years and it is ruining my life. Sometimes it tastes very bitter and smelly - not always.

I've had this problem for a few years now. I find it interesting that there are a few people who said that they also suffer from acid reflux pretty severely, something I also have in common. I've tried using a neti-pot in the shower and it seems to work pretty well. I don't think it fixes the cause but it helps with the symptom of the bad smell after a sneeze.

I actually rarely have any dairy in my diet and I don't eat much wheat either. I don't think that has much to do with it.

I have also had people tell me that using a waterpik has helped with the smell. I brush my teeth and tongue 2-3 times a day, floss regularly, as well as use mouthwash so the "dirty mouth" theory doesn't seem to have much validity.

I think it's something with the sinuses but I'm curious that so many people suffer from acid reflux as well. Maybe there's a connection?
