Hello, my name is jenny I am 24 and I was diagnosed w/ freibergs infarction 2 years ago. For the first year I got 3 cortisone injections into the joint. That helped for a month or so at a time. My dr said I could only have 3 shots a year. At the end of the year it was getting worse and worse and I wasin constant pain all the time.
I had surgery to debride the metarsal head and remove a couple loose bodies that formed. He also placed a screw through the bone. My foot felt a little better for a couple months. Then a big hunk of scar tissue formed around a nerve and I was in terrible pain again. After a couple of injections, the scar tissue has diminished. Just as the scar tissue went away my joint started hurting again and im in terrible pain! They retook X rays, and said that my bone looks great at the moment, and dont know why im in pain. I got another injection in the joint yesterday, and the pain has only gotten worse since then! I have never had that reaction before. They are usually helpful right away.
My dr siad we will have to consider some kind of surgery, since im in so much pain, but does not know what to do since my bone looks ok on x rays. Does anyone have any suggestions, or experience with this? I dont know what to do and im miserable!

Hello my name is Julie, I was diognosed with this desease when I was 15.(Im 38 now) I lived in agony for a few years prior to the diognoses. My family doc tried everything he could. Xrays, physio etc. and nothing worked. He sent me to a specialist 2 yrs later. Right away he told me what my condition was. I was given 2 choices special orthotics or surgery. I chose surgery because he told me that the orthotics might not work and were really expensive(700.00-1000.00) The recovery for me was very fast. Within 2-3 months I was doing everything I wanted. I have an S shaped scar on my right foot, and that is all. Julie XD

I am a 56 year old man who was at first mis-dagnosed with a stress fracture from two doctors. On the second visit to the second doctor, he took an x-ray and said that my bones looked too robust and there was no evidence (it sometimes takes four weeks for a stress fracture to show up) of a fracture. So he diagnosed Freibeg's, and he said it was the second diagnosis in a man in one day! I am becoming an Alexander technique teacher and I'm hoping to rid myself of this. I had been told by a physical therapist a long time ago that I had dropped metatarsals. I will let you all know if I get relief from this, despite the fact that many are saying you are stuck with it. I felt better in the period when I was walking in a surgical shoe for a couple of weeks, partly because they are wide and allow for more room for circulation. Now that I have the Freibergs diagnosis, I have had a bit of discomfort (I went for a long walk) and of course now that i know I don't have a fracture, I have allowed for more weight through the feet. I have also noticed that the second toe of this foot seems a bit bigger than on the other foot. I will do another post soon. :-) :-)

I was diagnosed with freibergs in 1982 aged 14.
I had the operation at that time to remove the joint, followed by a year of physio due to scar tissue.
Has it made any difference?...no, well worse as I ended up with a short toe as well as pain.
Today the pain after walking any length of time is the same as it was.
The pain never goes, in fact it has now moved to my big toe.
I was told back in 82 the success rate of improvement was low.

I am 66 yrs old & have just had surgery to remove the left second metatarsal head. I am two weeks post op. I feel that it will be the best thing I have done for my constant foot pain. I recall this pain starting when I was about twelve & wore a tarsal bar on the bottom of my shoe for a few years. The pain seemed to ease off, so went back to wearing normal shoes again, including high heels. I was about 40 yrs old when it started to bother me again, especially when walking on uneven ground. At age 64 I had my first Cortisone injection, as I had constant pain and inflammation, which relieved the pain for about 8 weeks. I had a 2nd injection which really did not ease the pain at all. So the next option was surgery. I too have a shorter second toe on my left foot now, but who cares as long as the pain has gone. Don't put up with the pain for as long as I did. See an orthopaedic surgeon, if not satisfied ask to be referred to another ortho. surgeon. It's your right to choose someone you are happy with who explains surgery & outcome in detail.

Hi,
Two days ago I was diagnosed with Freiberg's. I am a 19 year old college student and this is making me very uncomfortable. The foot doctor put me in a cast for a month. After reading all of these posts, I'm concerned as to whether this is going to help. I have been dancing my whole life and I love going out to clubs and wear high heels a lot. Does anyone know if this cast thing may work or if I should go see an ortho surgeon to possibly have some surgery done to correct this problem. The cast & crutches situation has made it very hard for me to get to classes in the middle of Boston and I was supposed to be starting a new job which now is unrealistic. Someone please help!

Aleliaw-
I am 20 years old and a college student as well. I was diagnosed with Freiberg's about 5 years ago. First things first, do not get a cortizone injection- it is one of the worst things you can do to an arthritic, collapsed joint. I made the mistake- the first one was fine but the 2nd made my condition spiral out of control. I'm not sure how bad your situation is but my joint was completely collapsed and fragmented. I was in a boot for 2 months, a cast for 2 months and just had surgery 2 weeks ago. I have pins in my foot and am going to be on crutches/with a cast for the next 6-8 weeks. I know how frustrated you are- I am a student in NYC trying to get around. If your situation is just in the beginning stages, being in a cast and keeping the joint immobile might give you relief for a long period of time.
Hopefully things work out for you. I know your pain and wish you luck.

Hi I am now 20 but good few years ago I was diagnosed with this disease.
I had it for over a year where i could hardly walk etc and it was recommended i had surgery. I did have this and it recovered quicker than expected and seemed to be fine.
This is in the right foot 2nd toe. After the op my toe didnt touch the ground which isnt a huge price to pay to be painless except now probably 5 to 6 years down the track it is playing up horrifically. so I do warn you that the op worked for a while but has now caused problems in the future.
I am not an athlete or dont stand for hours on end.
I am having to have treatment again to see what I can do about it.
Just talk to as many people as you can before you have the op.

My 20 year old daughter has been dealing with Freiburgs since January. The first podiatrist diagnosed her, gave her corisone and then said she needed surgery. We then took her to another podiatrist and she put her in a cast for 6 weeks. Once the cast was taken off the xray showed some improvement but not really. She is trying orthotics now but is already in pain. She works retail and is on her feet plus her orthotics don't fit into any flats that she can wear at work (she works at Express). Any suggestions on shoes to wear that are not running/tennis type shoes?? Other suggestions to try instead of surgery?

Hello everyone I am 23 years old from LONDON UK... When i was 12 i started experiencing nasty pains in my 2nd met in left foot. After 18 months of various tests including MRI scans, blood tests, x-rays i was diagnosed with freibergs disease but as the hospital i was under had no idea of what it was or how to treat this (as it is "very rare") i was moved onto the UCLH hospital in kingscross North London and ive got a brilliant specialist who knows all about the disease but on the downfall i was told from the start that this disease has NO cure all that can be done with treatment/operations is to reduce the pain and hope it works! from 13-18 i had 6 operations the 1st two he cleaned out the bone and reshaped in hope it would grow back... i had this repeated twice after then my cartlidge in the same ankle tore so have had keyhole surgery twice!! it wasnt until the FINAL OP that i actually felt pain relief which has lasted nearly 6years! The op that he did was breaking and resetting the joint and placing a tiny metal pin holding the bad joint together! ive had very rare pain since this and would highly recommend it to people!

Please show your doctor this article. The treatment described seems to have helped many Freiberg's sufferers.

I'm 14, and was diagnosed with frieburg's in my right foot when I was 12, then my left 6 months later. I had physiotherapy and cruthces for a few months the first time round, and that foot is practically completely healed; however, my left is still very painful. I still dance, as I've been told that I should still do as much activity as I can, just enough that it doesn't hurt too much (I also have diabetes), but the pain has started to flare up again recently. I really would be grateful if anyone knew of any place in the UK I can have an operation? x
