Hey im Claire and im 18! i got diagnosed with freiburg's when i was 13 in my left foot on the second toe. For years i've tried fitted shoes, different souls, i stopped horse riding blah blah....but im literally in so much pain. The Doctors say they can't do anything, half of them don't know what it is! I'm at University and it's making it harder to get around, im limping! i don't know what else to do because the last reply i got from my doctor was 'i've looked it up on the internet and it should heal it self'. Do you have any suggestions? I just want new feet :( reading all these comments have made me feel netter .... im not the only one! wooooo

Hi Jenny, I had the same exact thing thing done to my mpt joint. The doctor I had was great, he freed me of a majority of the pain and totally reduced the swelling. Everything he told me priory to surgery happened. There is scar tissue you in there now that gives it that awkward feeling. He mentioned a cortisone shot after the implantation of orthotics but never really stressed them or thought they the shot would make much difference, I guess you could say he was optimistic. Keep in my mind everything he said before surgery happened to a "T". So with that being said I didn't go ahead with the injections. He did go on to say I was at and end medical result. The doctor is Dr. George Theodore at Mass General hospital in Boston, he's chief of staff for Harvard medical school for orthopedics, also the NBC/NPR correspondent of orthopedics medicine. I highly recommend him. Best of luck and let me know how you're doing as you posted this a few months ago.

Curious as to who your doctor is (and what town). I'm over 60 & have had this problem for about four months now. Yeah, pretty old to suddenly develop it. I've probably had it for years but I've been doing Zumba for the last couple of years now and have put a lot of pressure on it. I guess my joints just couldn't handle all the bouncing. (Too bad, I love Zumba!). Anyway, I'm trying to decide if I want to have the recommended surgery my podiatrist suggested.

Now that the joint is removed, does your toe flop around? Curious because I may have to have this type surgery soon.

Hi Martha,

I am also from Ontario and I have Freigerg's as well. Where in Ontario are you from. I'm from the Toronto area. I was wondering where did you go for surgery? I was in a cast for 3 months last year to help get relief from the pain, then got a cortisone shot. I've gone to physio and even got custom made orthotics but nothing is helping. I want to find a good foot surgeon. Also, did the surgery help at all?
Thanks for your time :)

Curious how your daughter is doing, My daughter is 12, a competitive dancer and just diagnosed. She also has a stress fracture. She is in a boot for 6 weeks and we will see after that. Not sure if the Freiberg's was causing her pain or the stress fracture? Or if the Freiberg's caused the stress fracture the doctor said "no" but I wonder. Anyway dancing is her life I can't imagine her stopping so wondering about hope?

Fiona, I am very interested in your story. I am 3 mos post surgery for Freiberg's. The met head of my 2nd met was removed on my right foot. Pain was relieved but I feel deformed. I want to hope that I can run or at least jog in the future. I know it's way early but the surgeon says I will never be able to run. When did you first test your foot with jogging? The orthotic guy is no help. They are used to treating diabetic older people, that are just happy to walk again. I want more. I work in the composites industry and have started designing my own carbon fiber orthotic. This really pissed off the orthotic guy, but his magic can only get me so far. Love to hear more abouy yours and other experience living beyond surgery with this disease. Corbett

Hi there, i'm about to embark on surgery for Freiberg's in London. I would love to know who your surgeon was at UCLH - I can't seem to find anyone experienced in operating on Freiberg's patients!

Hi, I have Frieburgs also. It started in my left foot when I was 15 and now I think I might have it in my right foot at 37.
CAn you tell me who your doctor is and how your feet are doing now? I had surgery when I was 17 on my left foot with some success. I still have quite a bit of pain and now the right foot is really hurting (I have a doc appointment this week for x-rays).
Thanks,
Christina

Hi Everyone-

I have a 16 year old daughter who struggled with Freiburg's with years, starting when she was 13.  She was a very gifted cross country runner and she not only had to give up the sport, she was also in such excruciating pain that she could not walk on her foot at all without a CAM walker.  We took her to physicians all over the NY/NJ area, including at major instuitutions like the Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC.  We were advised that the surgery had a very low success rate, and were given no solutions beyond staying in the CAM walker.  After doing more research, we found Dr. Mark Myerson at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore.  He had a 6 month waiting list, but a local doctor had a connection to him and got us in to see him in just a few weeks time.  He took one look at my daughter's xray and scheduled her for surgery 2 weeks later.  She had a dorsal wedge osteotomy on her second metatarsal, which was extremely necrotic.  She has fully recovered the function in her foot, and walks today without pain.  One year out of surgery she has resumed most physical activities, but does not run cross country anymore, having switched to swimming.  I would encourage anyone who is having trouble finding help to KEEP SEARCHING, and we highly recommend Dr. Myerson (he was the 8th doctor we saw).

Hi all! I was a ballet, tap, jazz and modern dancer, training to become a teacher when I found out at age 24 that I had freibergs! I was devastated but was sent to a specialist. My second toe joint on my right foot was so bad some days I couldn't even walk. I had a large swollen lump over the joint and my doctors first step was to give me some strong painkillers (naproxen) to also help with the swelling, I also had an insole specially made for my foot to decrease the amount my foot bent when walking. I was also given a cortisone injection into the joint but I still had pain, and wanted to improve my chances of walking comfortably in old age.

I opted for surgery, the dead bone has been removed and the bone has been shaved down so there is a gap between. I had two weeks in a big bandage and am still unable to walk properly or very far (only been 3 weeks!) I would definitely only suggest having the operation as the last option!!! Try everything you can. Especially on young feet. It is very painful but I am hoping it will improve when properly healed.. Will try to keep you all updated!!
