Hello! Can anybody give me more information about frenectomy? I went to a denstist a few days ago and he told me that my lower frenum is too short and that it could start causing me trouble and that I should have it fixed. He said he could do it. I was wondering what kind of procedure it is and what could go wrong if I haven’t done it? Thank you in advance

Well, considering it is in the lower jaw, short frenum could limit the movement of the tissues they attach to, pull the gums away from the teeth and lead to recession. Frenectomy is supposed to help avoid this possible problem. In franectomy, the frenum is removed. The procedure itself is minor and may cause only slight bleeding and rarely infection. It can be done by either laser or scalpel. Laser procedure is said to be better because there is less bleeding and less post-op pain. The recovery may take longer than expected. It may take a few weeks until everything heals. There is another risk associated with lower jaw frenectomy. There is a possibility of damaging the nerve causing numbness that can last for months. The nerve damage would not inhibit movement but it may cause discomfort. Make sure your surgeon has experience with it.

re "may take longer than expected." Who determines what is "expected." Also, is a franectomy for the franum?
