Does anyone know what at age 77 I can eat less than half of what I ate at 17 and still gain weight?

Hi!
It all depends on how active you are. If you are more active, you'll need more calories and vice versa.
In order to gain weight, you need to introduce a lot of proteins into your diet as well as healthy fats (they can be found in seeds, nuts, olive oil, etc.).
Eat whole grains, fruits and veggies, lean protein, and low-fat dairy products.
The best sources of proteins are: steak, pork meat, chicken/turkey/duck meat, eggs, dairy and cheese, fish (salmon and tuna especially), and legumes (black beans, chickpeas).
