My 12 year old daughter was diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. When she was 10 everything seemed okay until last year, she was diagnosed with Mononucleosis. I would like to know does anyone else with Hashimoto's have trouble building immunity to viruses such as Mono. I keep thinking maybe the Hashimoto's is making it harder for her body to build immunity, because it is an autoimmune disease. I would appreciate any input on this.

Hello, my daughter takes 0.75 milligrams of Unithroid and a vitamin every day. From everything I have read and heard from her endocrinologist Hashimoto's thyroidis is an autoimmune disease. Which all in all her immune system thinks her thyroid shouldn’t be there and so in turn it tries to destroy it, thus an autoimmune disease. I guess I’ll need to keep researching this, because I don't know as much as I probably should about the disease either. I do know my grandmother had it, and the doctor told me Hashimoto's is very hereditary, but it runs in the women of families generally.

Hashimotos is an autoimmune disease. The body attacks the thyroid due to the belief taht it is a forign object. There is research claiming that grain proteins(gluten , gliadin) leak from the small intestine to the bloodstream and as a result cause issues in other parts of the body, because the body considfers these proteins foreign bodies.
Armour thyroid helps, talk to your doctor. In addition you might want to pick up a book from your library called Dangerous grains.
Another book that you might find interesting is The Paleo diet(No grains in this diet).
Good luck.

I've had Hashimoto's since I was 4 years old and am also 20 now. The way it was expained to me was that your body attacks your thyroid. I was also told that I am more suseptible to viruses and bacteria..In other words I will get sick easier and more often than normal people and it will be twice as severe and in longer durations.. I'm not trying to scare you or anything but its the truth and trust me your daughter will eventually get used to all of it.
