I am 29 year old male, software engineer by profession, generally in excellent health conditions. Few months back I joined gym and continued for around 3 months, then suddenly I need to travel to my native. I got some strong heart palpitations in the airplane after take off, i got checked by the doctor. ECG was normal. Since then i continuously get heart palpitations during sleep sometimes in strings of 3 to 6 in a row. They would occur as I drift off to sleep, and also wake me up during sleep. While sleeping it feels like some one is tieing up my legs and arms and i am struggling to set myself free, this is followed by sudden jolt and I wake up, feel short of breath.Sometimes it gets worst that i open the door and get out in the open air. Due to this problem i am not able to sleep properly. sometimes i would have completely sleepless nights. I am a smoker and used to have 4-6 cigarettes a day, i found that this problems gets exaggerated with smoking , so i reduced to 2 cigarettes a day and avoid having cigarette after 7 pm. Also, these palpitations get worst when I travel airplane especially during take off and landing. I haven't consulted any doctor yet. Can anyone help in rectifying this problem? Is there any medicine which can help?

WOW...I thought i was the only one with this problem...I feel relieved in some way knowing that I'm not just going crazy. I too have been experiencing chest pains day and night and feeling like I'm going to pass out all the time. At night when I start to go to sleep or just as I doze off I feel this big jolt that runs through me and I wake up startled with shortness of breath. I feel like I cant breath and it takes me awhile to catch my breath sometimes. This has been going on for about a week now and I'm exhausted because I haven't had much sleep. The thing that really irritates me though is that I went to the hospital and they did an ekg and said everything is fine and that it's anxiety. They put me on Xanax but deep down I know this isn't from anxiety. I have had anxiety before in the past and never felt like this before. He also told me to go to my doctor to have my thyroid checked. Honestly I'm hoping that, that is my problem so I can be somewhat at ease now knowing they found what's wrong with me. It just feels like the doctors should be doing a lot more and they blow off a lot of things to anxiety. It gets so frustrating....

u r having anxiety attacks while sleeping. i've suffered with them for six years and i'm 24 yrs old now. there is nothing wrong with you. i know the feeling you're experiencing. Take it easy, avoid caffeine and exercise lightly. try 50mg of zoloft if your problem persists. its very mild anti-anxiety medication. -Alexis :-D

I have been having these problems too! It is good to see that I am not such a rare case. At first they thought that I had some sort of borderline thyroid problem. Then I started going to a new doctor, and he told me to stop taking the thyroid medication to test me again since I had recently had a baby. The tests came back fine, so I went off. Then I started having vertigo during the days, also I was extremely tired, and having these sleep episodes.
I thought they were night terrors. I would fall asleep, and about 30 to 45 minutes into my sleep I would wake up running down the hall in a complete panic. It was like my heart had stopped beating, and it felt like I had not been breathing for a minute or more. I would be completely jittery and often felt really emotional. Each time like I had narrowly escaped death. Sometimes I would just sit straight up, sometimes I would be running, or standing. I know all of this seems like a panic attack in my sleep, but the panic seems to be caused by the feeling like my heart is stopping in my sleep, and I am not getting enough air.
I was on beta blockers, which were working okay, I moved to a small town from a big city, and lost my insurance, so eventually went off. I have been fine for about 8 months, and then last night it happened again. Only terribly worse. I got up, and couldn't breath, I wanted water, but couldn't swallow it, I had to go outside in the cold to get air. I felt the whole time like I was having a heart attack, and I would fall back down on the floor and never get up.
I am 31 and female, I have 2 kids, no high blood pressure, and am not currently under very much stress(if I am it is a total suprise)

im 17, 18 in under 2 weeks, and ive been experiencing these "attacks" for over s5 month now. i dont just experience them whilst falling to sleep, but i have them trhoughout the day. literally every day at least once. i go light headed, can hardly walk up my staircase without having to sit down and rest or manage a full day without napping at some point. i have had no previous health conditions and im probably slightly underweight if im honest but trying my best to overcome that..but anyway i've explained the pulpitation things to a few people but its one of those things people judge is blown out of proportion or overreacted about so ive left it, but its not going away. i dont know what to do nbext or what will happen if i dont do anything?

sleep apnea. It can cause severe anxiety and heart failure if left untreated. I have it too.

the same thing has happened to me for a few nights but to be honest it just sounds like tiredness and just before you fall asleep you realise youve lost your breath and your heart is beating really fast. i tend to fall asleep quite late so i think thats the problem.

I am 24 female, and when i was 16 i started having palpatations and my doctor told me to stop drinking caffiene, well they went away mostly. But when i was 18, I passed out at work and was taken to the hospital and passed out again. They then told me my heart had stopped for 22 seconds. i was admitter overnight and had an echo and ekg, ultrasound. they said i was having Vasovagal episodes. Which is another name for Neurocardiogenic Syncope. I have since had all together 4 episodes including those two.
Now I am experiencing the same jolt when i try to fall asleep sometimes. It feels like everything is slowing down then bounces back really quick and it feels like my heart is stopping. I have been scared cause i thought it was another problem with my heart, but after reading you guys i think its just another symptom of my condition. But i did know that you could take beta blockers to correct the problem. I a going to make an appointment with my cardiologist to talk to him about it. Thank you all and it does feel so much to know you are not alone in this.

Hi Boys N Girls Im Sam...
Ive been a bodybuilder up until dec of last year and very healthy otherwise and active as I trained 4 days a week. since ive stopped ive developed all kinds of problems, including the exact same post as the opening poster wrote, and the last post ive seen sense in since the doctors fobbed ne off with sleeping tablets that do not work and they are a stronger type - (strongest infact) they are 7.5mg Zopiclone, I take 1 and a half every night doesnt help, first few nights it did, but I got hallucinations, sweaty palms, felt proper off my rocker like when I used to take E many years ago (10 years go) and a horrid mettalic taste in my mouth which doesnt go away.
Anyway I think the problem with not sleeping is for going to bed late... I tried and sampled this
settled down at 8pm in bed at 9 quiet tv on until about 10ish .. drifted off perfectly. - Another and most nights I finsih work in the office about 12-2am which is exactly when all the issues come about, so my questions to you lot are?
Do you have actively or have ever in the last 6 months trained or lift heavy weights or stressed? anything thats quite demanding on the bodys neurological side aswell as phyisically demanding?
What time is everyone going to bed please?
Rther then persisting that we are all extremely ill and dying.. as we are most certianly not ;-) lets try discuss the factors in our life that may be causing these issues? as atleast 50% of these cases can be solved with lifestyle changes and literally breaking down the actively daily life things we do.
I hope this helps and I hate to be sinister so I wont even try, docs dont have the answer they'll just keep giving you pills to keep your liver happy! (NOT)
Its the specialsts that ultimately can do the tests we require but maybe the chat here could help too,

I am in the same boat as the post above, was going to gym a lot and doing a lot of physical work. Since I've stopped I have been experiencing frequent heart palpitations and the irregular heart rythmn.
Have had all the tests done and everything has come back within acceptable tolerences (some irregularities noted).
Have cleaned up my diet, taking all sorts of vitimans etc and still no improvement.
When I was going to the gym i was taking protein supplements and pre-training supps.......maybe I have done permanent damage?? 8-|

I too have been having these episodes, I do Jiu Jitsu every day from 630 pm to 900 pm then get home around 930. I usually get to bed around 10:00 pm and the last week I haven't been falling asleep until around 1200 because of the shocking sensation that happens when i'm just about to fall asleep or right after i fall asleep. I have a little bit of chest discomfort and sometimes I have a heart palpitation. I had this before a few years ago when i was having panic attacks and got over it. This time is different because i not too worried about it because i had it before. My guess would be it has to do with stress, lack of sleep, and caffeine. I was just recently training for the Pan American jiu jitsu tournament and was pretty stressed out, drinking more caffeine than normal and not getting enough sleep. When i take extra naps i don't get these episodes as bad either. Another thing I have noticed is if i feel my heart beat slowing down and the discomfort in my chest growing if i just relax my heart will get slower and slower till I get the, "shock" feeling in my chest which i hate. If i feel my heart slowing down and I jump up and do exercise my heart speeds up again and I feel fine until i relax again. All of your stories are pretty reassuring because now i know i'm not the only one and i'm not imagining these feelings. I'm just going to try to ride it out and get better.! good luck everyone.

I also have a simliar problem. Im an 18 year old male who is in good/average shape, I've had heart palpitations for years, theyre quite scary but I never thought anything of them. Only recently, like the last month or 2, I've been having shortness of breath while lying down and then when I'm about to doze off I have a mild heart spasm which makes the blood rush around my body or something and wakes me up instantly, it got to a point where I couldnt sleep all night and at around 6am my heart starting pounding very fast, was really scary and I couldnt stay still and I ending up heaving. Went to the doctors, said it was caused by stress (which I know isn't true) and it did go for 1 or 2 days, but now its back and just last night, I had a dream about being electrocuted and my heart and left arm was in serious pain, and it happened 4 times but I didnt wake, I awoke not long later however (alarm clock) and my body didn't feel right, and my chest still ached a little bit. All these diseases and symptoms everyone is saying is making me a little worried..
