I am posting to give hope to others looking into this procedure. I am in no way downplaying others’ experiences as I have no doubt of the pain they experienced, however, I wanted to give an account of my experience.
My hemorrhoids are a result of having our son over 7 years ago. I’ve since given birth to 2 other children…our youngest is 8 months and my DH had a vasectomy shortly after our youngests’ birth so I finally scheduled my procedure since we were done with babies.
A few days before my surgery, I got online and read the experiences of others. The Dr. also prepped me to expect pain worse than childbirth. I actually started to freak out the day before surgery and almost canceled because I just didn’t know how I’d manage all this with 3 little ones right before the holiday.
I had my hemorrhoidectomy 36 hours ago. Although I felt just minor pain after surgery, I opted for 1 hydrocodone on the drive home just in case we encountered a few “bumps” or the kids wanted me to sit up with them when I walked in the door. After I arrived home, I felt a little uncomfortable but did normal “mom” things when I got home. For the 1st 24 hours, I was extra cautious because I wasn’t sure when the pain would set in so I took 1 hydrocodone (max dose of 2) every 4 hours along with colace every 8 hours, Metamucil 2x/day and an Aleve 2x/day (I think I had more of a fear of being constipated). I started to notice my breastmilk drying up so I opted to cut back the pain meds altogether to just Tylenol so I could nurse our son. I am in limited pain and just slightly uncomfortable. I had my 1st BM about an hour ago and it was no more painful than a BM w/hemorrhoids. I’m keeping the hydrocodone on hand…just in case BUT all things considered, I feel great 36 hours later.
I hope I am not an exception to the rule BUT wanted to post hope for anyone looking into the surgery. Wishing you all the best and a speedy recovery!
