When you say "swelling," I don't know what that means.  I had bleeding until about the 3 week mark.

I don't have any swelling that I know of now.  I don't know, I've never looked.

Good luck with your recovery, I'm guessing that if you're still having issues or pain, it will lessen or disappear in the next week or so.

Thanks, I had external roids removed... maybe thats why it is all so visible. I am still swollen but it does seem to have reduced a bit. Hopefully the welling will continue to lessen. Thanks for you r response. :)

Wow, thanks for providing a little hope. I will be going under the knife in 5 hrs (3PM) today, and I was very close to canceling surgery when I woke up, due to all the negative stuff I've read over the past few days. I'm a 50 yr old male that has been dealing with these things off & on for 25 yrs. Enough is enough! God I hope it goes as well as yours seemed to. I've been through a lot of surgeries but this  one has me more anxious than I would have thought. That's where it is nice to hear a success story going into it. Wish me luck!

I just had surgery 48 hours ago and reading everyone's experiences have really helped. I thought I would share mine: 1. Keep ahead of your pain with prescribed medications 2. Take stool softeners 3. Make sure you have a donut to sit on 4. Gravity is not a friend. For the first day or two lay down as much as possible. It helps with swelling 5. Ice!! I literally stuck an ice cube between my cheeks and while at first it hurt.. Ice soon became my best friend! 6. Drink a lot of water 7. When it is time for your first BM try not to worry. This too shall pass and you will start to feel so much better I had a stage three internal (external at times) thrombosed hemorrhoid removed as well as another small internal one. I almost canceled my surgery out of fear from a long painful recovery. After 36 hours I felt so much better! What I thought was new hemorrhoids was only swelling. Hence the "ice between my cheeks" I was not going to let the swelling hold me back. Now at 48 hours post surgery, I am sore but do not need medication and actually went out for about an hour. I am almost 80% back to normal. A little difficult to hold my bladder (not sure why..assume this will pass) but am so happy to say I feel great after only 2 days! Definitely a success!

I had hemorrhoidectomy 2 years ago (multiple internal & external 'roids caused by pregnancy, then labor for 30 hours, and pushing for 6 HOURS, then finally c-section - ugh). Anyway, my experience was not as easy as Redfish had it, but it wasn't the worst thing ever, either. I did have a complicated case, though...
Best advice is: (1) to get a GOOD, highly-recommended doctor that you can feel comfortable with. (2) eliminate meat and other slow-digesting foods for a few days before and then for about 2-3 weeks after. Really, your body will be much happier this way. Foods you eat before don't matter all that much, since you'll be taking surgery prep, which cleans EVERYTHING out. (3) Don't skimp on your pain meds, stool softeners and fiber supplement. My doc recommended Benefiber, which worked nicely without tasting or feeling gross. Post-'roid-op is NOT the time to be tough and do without pain meds - just take them on schedule, before feeling pain, and everything will be much easier. (4) Be careful with what you do eat for a couple weeks after - keep it fiber-y and low on additives/spices/meat/fats. Don't rush back to normalcy - healing down there takes a while, let it all heal-up to avoid further complications. (5) keep it all clean down there. Sitz baths after every potty trip. Use water soaks & squirts, and really minimize wipes/wiping for several days to a week after. (6) Hydrate, Hydrate, HYDRATE! Drink more water than ever before. I'd avoid much gatorade, electrolyte drinks, artificial sweeteners & too much juice cuz they can cause diarrhea & irritation. A little is ok, but more is not better. Best to drink mostly water, tea, broth, coconut water, herbal tea, water-diluted juice, infused water (cucumber, mint, lemon/lime, watermelon, etc). (7) take 3 weeks off from any work and obligations, & plan to be in bed, near potty - just load up the netflix & kindle, clean out all the email you've put off, get those books & movies from the library you've been meaning to read/see but haven't had time to, etc. Above all else, you need to heal well and avoid complications.
Best of luck!
