Hello. I slept with a woman several weeks ago without a condom. Later, I have heard some rumors about her having HIV. I am worried and I would like to get tested. On the other hand, I don’t know how accurate HIV tests are now. I would appreciate if anyone could tell me this. Thanks.

Hello. HIV tests are pretty accurate now. They measure antibodies that are produced by organism as a response to HIV presence. However, for antibody production it is needed between several weeks and up to six months. This period when antibodies are not measurable is called the window period. In that period you cannot detect HIV infection, although a person is carrying a virus. There are more modern methods that detect nucleic acid of HIV. Such method is PCR, but it is more expensive and not available everywhere. It can detect HIV as soon as it reaches organism. I suggest you to visit a doctor and get tested. If the result is negative, you should repeat it again after several months. Good luck!
