I think the best thing is to have realistic expectations. Not everyone will feel great in a few days which is what I was lead to believe. For me, I almost passed out after the procedure due to a bad reaction to the local anesthetic and I had a tremendous pain in my right lower abdomen that made walking to the car very difficulty. The worse pain during the procedure was the initial injection of the pain killer.
I had my Vasectomy on March 19th and the first 4 days were quite painful although the medicine (Vicadin & Acetimin.) worked well. I stayed flat on my back and iced things down for the first four-five days. Pain and swelling dramatically decreased by days 7 & 8 and I haven't needed any pain medication since day 10 although I feel very small twinges of discomfort if I move or sit in an awkward way, but it is very minor and getting better each day. I feel about 90% back to normal at day 12, ejaculations feel fine, and the only difference I notice is a little less semen when I ejaculate.
I would do it again and feel confident all is okay at this point, but set your expectations for a few weeks to fully recover, and if you get lucky it will take less time. It's a little different for each person.

I'm on day 2. Got it done via local anaesthetic yesterday. The needles going in was a slight sting - uncomfortable, but it didn't last long. My left side was over quickly, lots of weird feeling pulling and twisting, but no pain. My right side hurt heaps the moment he started, so the doc inected more anaesthetic, which did the trick.
I've had basically no pain. Yesterday about the only 'pain' as I'd describe it, would be as if you scratched yourself and rubbed salt or lemon into it. I would give the pain a 0.1 out of 10. My ballsack has swollen a little. Rested up as instructed, ice on and off a few times but not lots. Had a great night sleep. Needed no painkillers.
This morning when I woke up I felt fine. Zero pain at all. Only every now and then I adjust my boys I can feel an uncomfortable feeling, but it goes away. I was expecting two stiches each side, but it looks like a single centre stitch. It was a standard vasectomy, the nurse showed me two bits of vas they cut out! The actual suture site reminds me of an inny belly button... I imagine that will change when the swelling goes down. I actually got bored this morning from resting, so I went 4wding for most of the day on my own, no discomfort from being in the driver seat most of the day nor bouncing around offroad.
So I have no reason to believe things will be any different from here on.

Ok men let me give you some real insight. First of all the procedure itself is no big deal. I have had dental procedures worse than this. Where i have made a mistake is judging recovery time. Before you have this done you need to consider how you earn a living. All of you who had sex, played tennis, ran two miles or lifted weights the next day can kiss my butt! I'm 35 years old and very active. I had the procedure done on friday and today is the following thursday. I had taken friday and monday off and planned to return to work on tuesday. A big negative! If you have an office job probably would be ok to work by wed with some mild discomfort. I'm still a little sore today. Walking up stairs or for long periods of time seem to be the worst. Ive done everything the doc said. Laid on the couch and iced friday, saturday, and sunday. He gave me lortab pain medicine which i took thru monday. I can say i feel much better today doing some more intense chores around the house but for every 2 hrs work still requires a 30 min sit down. Intense i would consider mowing the yard, fixing squeaky door, and changing oil in the cars. Not doing dishes come on people im not a freakin wuss! Pisses me off other people on here making you feel like you have a mangina now that youve been neutered if you dont have sex with your wife six times the next day! Ok had to vent. Best advice i can give anyone is take a full week off of work! I'll say it again. Take a full week off of any kind of work and do only what you feel like doing. If you can go back earlier wonderful but plan for the worst. I planned for the best and I'm now having to deal with a discouraged boss. He thinks im milking it to far im sure but hey if i dont take care of myself who will. right? Best advice for a vasectomy is to take a FULL WEEK OFF FROM WORK!

now it is day eight for me. I went back to the doc for a follow up yesterday. Im still struggling a little i told him. I cant understand why im still sore and why do i have four balls now? He said "WHAT'' I could see the horror in his eyes like he had no clue what i could be talking about. Right above my balls i guess where those tubes connect feel like little marbles. So i have a half size ball on top of my normal balls. He said you must have an infection and gave me some antibiotics. He said if you dont start getting better in a few days you need to come back in. Now im ticked off. I got the two incisions with the knife old school style by some freakin id**t i guess. Anyway i wrote the post above this one and as you can tell this little simple procedure has had alot more to it then what i was prepared for. So with all this said has anybody else had anything like this? Little knots above there balls? And dont forget balls are fine the little knots are what are sore!!!!!!

just completed the scalpeless vasectomy...keyword being "scalpeless" but not without a cutting (for those uninformed or mislead) Anyway, all went well NO PAIN during the actual procedure. one incision made along the midline, both vas' clipped through same hole, clamps and caurterized, one suture and we were done. like most have said, if there is a painful part, it could oly be related to the local anesthesia. All that being said, post op, i can only relate the dull pain to that of a accidental kick to the groin. currently resting with knees elevated and one Percocet on board. Based on the previous horror stories i am going to take it easy for the next 48 hrs and refrain from lifting anything heavier than the remote. to all pre-op persons....insure you get an experienced urologist to perform the procedure. just think...general practitioners know a little about everything, but urologist are focused practitioners. only trust your "boys" with the best available. if you treat your body like a mercedes you will receive mercedes results, if its a hyundai.....shop for the lowest bidder. Army Strong!!

I just had it done on Friday, and courtesy of the US Navy to boot. I took my 2 valium an hour before as prescribed. By the time I got there he could have told me I lost every dime I had in the stock market and I wouldn't have given a damn. The local anesthetic did burn on both sides, but grit your teeth, breathe and it's over before you know it. I watched the clock over my head and my right side took 7 minutes, the left side took 18 minutes because he had to pull my testicle off to the side. I did exactly as prescribed, got home, took a Tylenol with codiene, iced until the codiene knocked me out and I've been fine. Saturday I watched numerous movies and read with constant icing. Saturday afternoon I started to go stir crazy so I went down to my boat and drank beer on the dock while icing with peas. I feel a little sore, but continue to ice and my testicles aren't swollen. I would recommend that each dude is going to react differently, but take it easy, keep the ice on and don't go back to the gym, running or any other crazy c**p for a few days. It's Sunday, I'm still laying in bed and moving ice between my groin and my rotator cuff from a lifting injury.

The actual procedure was not that bad at all, felt a very small pinch when the doc administered the local meds. Felt a little stretching sensation when he opened me up (I had the single incision), then a very strange feeling when he numbed the left vas, then it felt like a hot cattle prod got stuck in my prostate when he pulled (the pain went away in a few seconds), the right side was virtually painless just felt some tugging. The whole thing lasted a whole fifteen minutes or so got out at about 4 PM on Monday. Doc said I should have minimal busing and all but no swelling because my balls were so relaxed. I made the mistake of going grocery shopping immediately after the procedure, I felt like a million bucks and felt that there would be no harm in walking around the store while my proscription for Tylenol 3 was being filled. I felt a strange pulling almost bleeding sensation on my right side ( I thought I pulled my stitch and was bleeding). Got home and noticed some bruising high on my right side, I had seen post op pics and thought nothing of it. Took some T-3 and went to bed. Woke up at like 2AM in excruciating pain, when I got up it felt like my balls were being ripped off, by the time I made it to the bathroom I was all but in tears, I flipped the light on and saw to my horror that my balls had been transformed into what looked like a purple grapefruit. I immediately put ice on my junk and took some more T-3. By Friday I went in to have my stitch removed and the doc was appalled by my condition, I had been reduced to about the size of a baseball. What the doc said I did was pop a capillary on the vas while walking around the store and had caused internal bleeding, I am seven days post op and my swelling is all but gone, and my balls are a light plum color, the doc figures that Ill be just about back to my old self by next Friday. My suggestion to anyone considering a vasectomy I would totally recommend listing to the doc about taking it easy for 48-72 hours. Had I listened I would probably not be in the pain I am in. Just take it easy and use plenty of ice.

My initial post is above, dated "04/21/10 - 05:59" - back then I was on day 2.
I am now on the 4 week mark. It has all gone faultlessly. Zero pain all the way. No drugs needed. My ballsack got a little bit of swelling and some mild bruising, but nothing extreme. I had my single centre stitch removed on day 7. Everything went well.
I mentioned back then that my stitch site looked like an 'innie belly button'. Well, that has all gone now, you simply cannot tell physically.
There are good news stories to be told, and here I am saying mine amongst some posts of doom, gloom and sadness from others - if nothing else, to give a balanced view. Take the good with the bad and make up your own mind.
Would I receommend it to others? You bet! In fact, I have. A buddy of mine got done last week, and his experience is exactly as mine!!!!

I am on day 8 of my recovery. The doc had problems finding my vas deferens. The procedure took longer than expected. I was back to work 4 days after the procedure, but I should have taken following week off. The best pain relief is when I am lying on my back. I still have slight pain and my scrotum has some bruising remaining.

A lot of people will tell you that it takes 3 days to recover, and while this can be true, I am 2 days shy of a month, with only some minor improvements, which my Doctor says isn't uncommon. It can be very routine for most, but the unlucky few, such as myself, would describe it as an awful experience. The procedure itself was the worst pain I've felt in my life.

It has been 7 days since i had mine done. The procedure was painless and quick. I drove myself home and stopped at the drug store to get meds. The first 2 days i used a lot of peas to keep the boys cold. Took pain pills before i felt pain and did so for 2 days. I stayed home from work and got lots of rest. By day 3, got out of the house and after a while started to hurt. I can tell you, gravity is not our friend during this. I wore a jock strap for 4 days and now wearing briefs. Have to keep the boys supported until bruising is gone. 4 day went to the Baseball game. Stairs had a small challenge, but over all ok. Sitting and standing was a battle up to day 6. Now day 7 and still a little tender but back to normal activity. I will wait 4 more days before i return to the gym. Once i have the lab work complete and i'm negative for active sperm, sex will be awesome. Not having to worry about getting my girlfriend pregnant. I would recommand this to any guy/and couple who does not want anymore children. Most guys have played some kind of sport and if you ever broke a bone during the sport or any other time, you survived that and this is not as painfull as a broken bone. Good luck and if you have it done, do it on a thursday and relax until monday when you go back to work. Good luck

NOT EVERYONE WILL HAVE THE SAME RECOVERY TIME! So try to be courteous to others feelings and don't call someone weak for having a long recovery time. If you're one of the non-weak boasting lucky ones calling others weak for not recovering faster and you're back doing what you do best with pillows and other inanimate objects then Good For You; They must have removed your sack then because mine is still present and not to happy with the current situation and outlook on life. :x I'm going on a week post operation. Prescription drugs haven't even dullled the recovery pain that I have and I'm really sensitive to prescription drugs. They made me loopy, but I still had the pain. The Procedure went great, and I wasn't really bothered by the fact that another female besides my wife was in the room watching (my wife wasn't there at all), but if you're not used to something like that you might want to discuss it with your doctor about not having a female assistant present during the procedure.
The only thing that worked in helping my pain was sitting still and not moving for a few days. Just plan for the worse possible scenario for recovery time and plan on a week off from work. I stand up alot working on aircraft, but it would be different if I had a sit down job and didn't have to be so mobile all the time. Just go at the pace that you're comfortable with. The faster you try to get up and do stuff, the longer the recovery. Just get 2-3 bags of frozen pees for an ice pack and keep rotating them. I'll tell you that is the best conforming icepack that you could ever ask for. I'm not a big fan of pees, but I sure have a new found respect for them.
The best way that I can describe my pain is having my sack put in a vice and having pressure applied constantly when I get up and walk around. Along with that discomfort, it also feels like a horse mildly kicked the lower part of my abdomen above my shlong. :? I'm going on a week tomorrow of recovery and I still haven't felt much of a difference in pain. I went to work 2 days ago only to come home early due to the pain. I couldn't concentrate on what I was doing. I took the following day off to sit and recovery some more. I still don't feel that great, but it'll be better when it's better. You gotta know your limits and not cross them.
I consider myself to have a high pain tolerance. I was using a grinder and accidently ground into my thumb last december opening up a 2 inch gash 1/4 inch wide all the way down to the tendon on my thumb. (I know that it wasn't the smartest thing to do, so USE GLOVES WHEN GRINDING! Accidents happen.) I was more worried about blood loss than pain, but the pain was managable for me. I work alot with my hands, but that didn't keep me from returning to work the next day without meds after receiving 12 stitches... Now, the vesectamy is a whole different animal to me, and every man is different, so don't con yourself into thinking that it is not a big deal and that you'll be back up on your feet doing jumping jacks and a 1 mile sprint. You may be surprised as I was.

I had my no scalpel vasectomy done on 8/6. As of today, 9/15, I am still experiencing different levels of discomfort. Like others, I have read all the "post vasectomy syndrome" horror stories and have now made myself crazy with thoughts that this will never go away. My doctor has said that it is normal and still in a recovery period. Hard to believe him after reading all these stories but hoping for the best as I am sure he is right. Just wish I could hear more stories from men who had longer recovery periods and finally got back to a normal state. Most stories I have read either are "I healed within days and are OK" or "i have had pain for 6 years"....no middle of the road!
Anyone out there have a happier ending????
