I have DM1 for 6 years now; I have been having nausea as a major symptom the last 2 months. In the beginning I had symptoms like shakiness, sweating and weakness, and it was easy to be aware that that was a hypo. What I used to do was to go and eat something. But now when I’m nauseous I find it so difficult. First of all it also happened that I was actually feeling nauseous but had no hypo, it was just what I ate that made me feel sick. Second of all this light nausea when I’m just with a little bit down bg doesn’t make me think about hypo immediately. So I’m tired of this…can anybody help me?

I know exactly what you mean! It is almost impossible to put something on your mouth when you’re nauseous, isn’t it? There are some things you can try to do it to make this moment a little bit easier:First of all, the sooner you are aware of the hypo the better, and you must act fast! So when you start “thinking” I have a hypo don’t wait five minutes to act, really go and measure it and act immediately. Every minute that you wait your nausea will get worse! This means that you have to be even more conscious to have your BG meter always with you. Second thing is that if you drink something sweet and cold it will be easier. Like always having some orange juice in the refrigerator is a good idea. The carb tablets are also a good option if you are not at home. You should always carry a can of juice in your bag. But keep in mind that in case your nausea is really bad and you cannot even drink (which will be a rare event, but it can happen) you must really take care that eventually someone brings you to the ER for an IV glucose administration. But I am pretty sure that if you act fast you will manage to solve it just with the drink.
