OK, you don't mention you're age or country, so odds are yet again you're a minor (US 18 typically, UK 16, Canada 14 - I believe, (I'm UK)) so check the law before you indulge.
That being said, the medical issue is this: the hymen is a minor 'sign' of virginity, its role I would hazard a guess to be simply to act as a barrier during the earlier years of a child's life to casual intrusion, debris, dirt, anything an infant might encounter in a forest or savannah - who knows.

You mentioned that you may be scared to have sex. The fear of sex can greatly reduce the act itself by not allowing comfortable penetration due to lack of natural lubrication.
