I just had surgery yesterday and feel like my throat is closing, having a hard time breathing, my bottom lip is also swollen. Is this a normal side effect? It is really scaring me! :-(

Hi Whitney,

Thyroidectomy has many side effects, being partial or total. However not everybody experiences all side effects. Your surgery is still fresh and your healing process can last up to four weeks. So any pain and swelling in first few days is normal. I know that people have problems with breathing and the pain in throat is often accompanied after the surgery, but I haven’t heard that lip can get swollen. What did your doctor told you about this? Are you using any medication right now? What are you eating?

Have you noticed any bleeding after the surgery? This is also not uncommon and you have to know that there is possibility of more complications after the procedure.

I had a partial thyoidectomy 3 months ago.  It took about 4-6 weeks to feel normal energy levels..  ALthough i still have some trouble swallowing and discomfort.  Not sure if this is normal.  It is not all the time but still not quite normal feeling in my thorat. Any one else have the same feelings.
