Hi! A short and quick answer about the weight gain = for some reason iron increases insulin secretion. More insulin = weight gain.

Thank you! The official sources say such show effect is unknown, but the views on this forum testify otherwise. I'm here cos I've a friend with that problem and doesn't want iron pills for her anemia. Someone should listen... I'm hoping some natural multi vitamin supplement with iron might help....

Yes. I have gained 25 pounds in 2 months. I tried to figure out what I changed or was doing different and I realized the weight started coming on after I started taking the pills. I run 12 miles total Monday through Friday and I'm still gaining weight. I eat 2 meal bars and I eat cereal for dinner. I have yet to lose anything. Feeling hopeless.

I started taking iron a few months ago around end of March/April of 2017 for low iron levels. The initial effects were the opposite of how I should have felt. I felt tired, muscle soreness, felt like I was in a fog and when I ate I didn't feel full. I cut the dosage to one a day vs. three and I felt better (less soreness and tiredness). (I consulted the Dr and he said try it). Then I noticed I was getting fat. My diet is pretty healthy. I don't eat a lot of sugar, carbs, but I figured I still needed to exercise more so I made sure I walked 10,000+ steps a day and ran on the treadmill 5 miles at least once a week and I was watching my diet. I went to the Dr. he said your numbers doubled, but you are slightly under where you should be. (The visit was 6 weeks after the initial diagnosis.) So I continued to take the pills and I am due back in the next week or so. Anyway, even with my exercising, and eating more healthy, I am experiencing weight gain/ or I was bloated in the mid section, thighs and hips. I looked pregnant. I have never had an issue with my weight ( if I am gaining weight I scale back). This past week 7/10, I stopped taking the pills to see what would happen. I feel fine. I am not tired and the bloat in my stomach went down considerably. My ass is smaller and my thighs are not rubbing together when I walk. I am going to the Dr. again and I will tell him no more pills for me. If I get good advice I will write post a reply (much shorter). I may just take a multi-vitamin and see if my iron levels hold.

I'm so glad to find this. I thought I was crazy with everyone saying there was no way an iron pill would cause weight gain. I'm an RN with a masters degree and cant figure out why physically, but it's there. 5 lbs in 5 weeks, mainly around the waste, thighs, and rear. Thank you for validating. We aren't crazy.

Yes, I’ve gained 8 lbs in 3 months. My waist, hips and thighs are ballooning. I checked back with the doctor yesterday and saw that my blood levels are the same as when I started these supplements! I want to stop taking them because I’m gaining weight, getting fat and mainly because they’re not helping me at all.

i'm so relieved i found this forum! same for me - i've been taking liquid iron for 8 months with no effect on my blood levels whatsoever. instead gained 22 lbs! i was not able to lose the weight with a close to zero diet, nothing helped, i got really desprate over this. i stopped taking the iron one week ago and the weight is going down now - slowly! plus my metabolism is skyrocketing. i hope to be back to my old weight soon, but i'll never go back to the iron and start to supplement naturally.

I have been taking an iron supplement for years now and it did not affect my weight at all. I'm still maintaining a body mass index that is within normal.

I just started to take an iron supplement as well about 3 weeks ago. My overwhelming fatigue is gone, hot flashes are minimal but I am also gaining weight around abdomen and hips abs thighs. I’m not eating anymore and in fact am exercising more, but it looks as though I’m bloated in those areas.
